A Background Character’s Path to Power Chapter 345

With his final decree hanging in the air, the King’s stern expression softened almost imperceptibly. "That is all. Now, if you have any questions, you may ask them right away."

A determined, thoughtful silence followed. The heirs exchanged glances, their minds already racing through the implications of the trial. True to his role, Crown Prince Bane was the first to step forward, his expression one of polite and strategic curiosity.

"A pertinent question, Father," he began, his voice calm and measured. "Will our destinations be assigned to us, and if so, is the process random? Or will we be given a choice in where we are to serve?"

It was the perfect first question—practical, intelligent, and exactly what every one of his siblings was thinking.

"A fair question." King Liam gave a slow, approving nod. "And no, they will not be random. Your destinations have already been chosen for you, each selected to present a unique challenge that I believe will be... instructive. The assignments will be revealed to each of you privately, one day before your departure."

Prince Neron spoke next, his voice cool and analytical, cutting straight to the logistics. "What is the time limit for this trial, Father? Is there a defined period in which we must achieve this ’tangible solution’?"

"The duration will be determined by the complexity of the problem and the speed of your work," the King replied. "It could be resolved in a day, or it could take a week. However, you will have a maximum of one month to complete your task before you are recalled. Efficiency will be noted."

Princess Clara bit her lip, her thoughts clearly on her future. "And what of our other duties? Father, my studies at the Empire... I am expected to return."

"Don’t worry, that has already been taken care of," the King said gently. "The Empire is well aware of our succession rites and holds them in high regard. Consider this an extension of your studies. In fact, be aware that your performance will be monitored by the professors at the Imperial Academy as well. The eyes of the Empire are upon you, Clara. See it as an opportunity."

This new information made Clara stand even straighter, a mix of pride and pressure flashing in her eyes.

Then, a small, hesitant voice spoke up. It was Prince Ilan. "Father... the observers... how will they know what we do? Will they... be watching us all the time?" He paused, his cheeks flushing slightly as he clarified his greatest fear. "Even... the private moments?"

A wave of awkward silence, followed by a few poorly suppressed snickers, moved through the crowd. Norvus rolled his eyes, and even Josephina allowed herself a faint, exasperated sigh.

The king, however, did not laugh.

He barely stopped himself from smacking his stupid son right then and there.

"...Of course not, Ilan," he said, after calming himself down. "They are observers, not voyeurs. They will assess your actions and interactions within the community. Your private quarters are your own. Let that put your mind at ease."

Finally, the King’s gaze settled on the daughter who had been silent since the beginning. "Aurelia," he said, his voice gentler. "You have been quiet. Do you have something to ask as well?"

All eyes turned to the Ghost Princess. She seemed to shrink for a moment under the attention before meeting her father’s gaze. Her expression was not one of strategy or logistics, but of deep concern. She spoke, her voice carrying a surprising emotional weight.

"Father," she began, her words hesitant but thoughtful. "What... what if we fail?" She wasn’t asking about the personal consequence to herself; that was clear. Her next question confirmed it. "What will happen to the people... to the problem we were supposed to solve? Will they simply be left with their hardship after we are recalled?"

The question hung in the air, sobering and profound. It was a concern none of the others had considered, focused as they were on winning. It was a question born not of a politician, but of a compassionate heart.

The King’s expression softened further, looking upon his daughter with a new depth of recognition.

"That is the most important question asked here today," he said, his voice low and earnest. "And it speaks well of your character that you asked it."

He addressed all of them, but his eyes remained on Aurelia. "You will not be leaving them to failure. The Crown will never abandon its people. If your solution proves unsuccessful, or if you are recalled at the month’s end, we will send a representative to implement a permanent, state-funded solution. So, don’t worry, the people won’t suffer."

"However," he continued, his tone grave, "do not see this as a safety net for your own efforts. Your success or failure will be judged on what you accomplish within your time there. The intervention of the crown will be noted as your failure to solve the problem yourself. Your goal is to make that intervention unnecessary."

Aurelia listened intently, her shoulders relaxing slightly as the weight of her worry for the unknown villagers was lifted. She offered a small, grateful nod. "Thank you for clarifying, Father."

Then, King Liam’s gaze swept over his children once more, meeting each of their eyes in turn.

"Any more questions?" he asked, his voice echoing in the now-hushed courtyard.

A unified, respectful silence was his answer. Some shook their heads slightly. The initial shock had been processed, the practicalities addressed. Now, the reality of the challenge ahead began to sink in, leaving no room for further queries, only for thought.

"Good," King Liam said, a note of finality in his tone. "Then let us continue the festivities."

He raised his voice, addressing the entire assembly once again, seamlessly shifting the atmosphere from one of grave import back to that of a celebration, however strained it might now be.

"Think of today as your final chance to rest and enjoy yourselves before your journeys begin. The food, the music, the company—let it fortify you."

"For at dawn in seven days..."

"A new Chapter for this kingdom begins with all of you."
