Chunxi didn’t think much about Lin Yue’s decision, after all, they were selling different things. It was only logical for Lin Yue to find another suitable place. Chunxi didn’t refuse the buns that Lin Yue offered her; she knew Lin Yue was generous and meant well. Although she felt grateful, she didn’t say much, just kept it in her heart. However, after eating half a bun, she packed up the rest to bring home to her mother-in-law and son, as a little to tide her over was enough.
Lin Yue’s refusal to set up a stall with Chunxi was due to her own considerations. After all, it involved their interests. Human nature was unpredictable. Although they had gotten familiar and friendly over the past days, their relationship hadn’t reached the point where Lin Yue was ready to disclose everything about herself to Chunxi.
Before Zhao Erhu woke up, besides selling embroidered items, this was her biggest source of income. Lin Yue didn’t want others to know about her financial status, which was in part due to her desire for privacy, and also because she anticipated her goods would sell well. Even if Chunxi sold all her pickles and wild vegetables, she wouldn’t make much. Wouldn’t Chunxi have some thoughts when seeing a clear difference in their earnings?
Lin Yue’s actions weren’t because she thought Chunxi would certainly become greedy and ungrateful with the sight of money. It was more prudent to be cautious and prevent any issues before they arose. This way, she could be at ease and maintain a pure friendship with Chunxi, which was beneficial for both.
Lin Yue walked ahead with Dalang for a while, then noticing that the spot had plenty of people and no one was selling poultry or livestock, which might have an unpleasant smell, and not seeing any villagers nearby, she set her basket down. On the ground, she spread out a coarse cloth she had prepared earlier and displayed her goods one by one, then she and Dalang each took a bun to eat.
After being busy for most of the night, she was indeed a little hungry. There had been time to eat on the ox cart, but with so many people around, Lin Yue didn’t feel comfortable taking out her food, making others watch her eat. Besides, it was early morning, and many heading to the market hadn’t had breakfast. What if someone with thick skin asked for some food? Would she give it or not? These were all villagers; denying them might seem stingy, but then again, she had prepared these goods for selling.
Lin Yue had a small appetite, and even though she was hungry, one and a half buns were enough to fill her up. After drinking some water and passing the water bag to Dalang, Lin Yue told him to eat slowly while she began to tidy up her stall. She started calling out her wares, aiming to sell the hot buns quickly while they were still warm.
“Buns for sale! Warm buns, fragrant and soft, only five coins each! Come and buy them! Delicious buns, sweet, fragrant, and soft, very tasty, only five coins each! First come, first served, when they’re gone, they’re gone! Come and buy them!”
Lin Yue was quite familiar with vending as she had experience from her university days when she used to set up street stalls in squares or near subway stations to earn tuition and living expenses. Now, her sales pitch came naturally, and her loud calls attracted the attention of many passersby. Some, out of curiosity, came over to look. One, two, three… slowly a crowd formed.
“Young lady, are you really selling these buns for only five coins each? The buns at the Bun Shop cost ten coins. Yours are half the price; surely they can’t be that tasty?”
