Think it over, and let’s not talk about this anymore. Let’s drink, just the two of us.” Uncle thought deeply about things due to his age and experience.
Zhao Erhu opened his mouth as if to retort, but in the end, he couldn’t say what was on his mind. His expression was especially complex. There are some things you can deceive others about but not yourself. Just as Uncle had said, there was a ten-year age difference between him and Lin Yue. He hadn’t thought it mattered before, but it felt different now that he really cared.
Lin Yue was such a good woman, she deserved better. He feared he wasn’t good enough for her, which is why he was so anxious, keeping her firmly within his reach as much as he could, fearing any unexpected changes. Even though he said he trusted Lin Yue and kept telling himself to believe in her, he panicked at the thought of her going to the market to sell food and refused her without discussion. “Where’s your wife? Is she up yet?” Zhao Xinglin glanced around and, not seeing Erhu’s wife, inquired. His main purpose for coming was to see Erhu’s wife.
“Indeed, she’s still in the house. I wore her out last night, and she’s still sleeping, hasn’t woken up yet.” Zhao Erhu’s reply was very ambiguous, and seeing Zhao Xinglin look at him with a suggestive and understanding expression, Zhao Erhu knew Zhao Xinglin had misunderstood, but he didn’t explain and asked him the reason for his visit instead.
Hearing the voices conversing in the courtyard, Lin Yue, who slept in the room, faintly registered that a guest had arrived. Lin Yue couldn’t sleep anymore, knowing that people might find out she, as a daughter-in-law, was sleeping in while her husband was up working. She worried about how it might tarnish her reputation, got dressed hastily, and got up.
