Even though the New Federation had prepared a ‘traction orbit’, and even though agents of the Central Intelligence Agency had frantically contacted officials from countries that were conquered, ultimately, not a single ship transitioned directly to the outskirts of the Minter City battlefield.
Faced with the most powerful Empire in the galaxy, the stars fell silent.
Yang Ming realized that this was actually a critical moment.
If Minter City were turned to cosmic dust, the Empire would most likely face backlash from the stars.
If other nations could not even secure their own safety, how could they stand tall in the Milky Way?
What would the Empire choose?
Suddenly, electromagnetic noise transmitted into the earpieces of Yang Ming and his group, as an unavoidable physical phenomenon when broadcasting with high power electromagnetic waves.
Following that, Yang Ming and the others heard a resonant female voice:
“Honor of the Emperor Star! Today it shines above Minter City!
“The Imperial Invincible Fleet has now surrounded the Minter Star!
“The brightness of the Dreadnought is enough to destroy everything your nation has built, and this is nothing but a justified retaliation by the Empire against your nation for leading the ‘bug disaster’ that harmed our citizens!
“Your nation continuously breaches the bottom lines of human civilization, acting recklessly, oppressing the weak and bullying the might within the Galaxy, annexing over a dozen polities in mere hundreds of years, promoting your strength by robbing other nations, manipulating small countries’ economies with your capital, and your citizens’ welfare is built upon the flesh and blood of many weak civilizations in the Galaxy!
“Today, the Empire has sufficient reasons to completely annihilate your Head Star.
“Yet the great Emperor of the Empire, following principles of compassion and mimicking the actions of the Empire’s past Emperors, does not wish to see billions of humans vanish like smoke.
“His Majesty will now issue an important speech.”
Dozens of medium-sized ships extended their ray tubes, weaving beams of light where the figure of the Emperor appeared in space, on electronic screens around Minter City, and in the sky above Minter City.
The Emperor, dressed in traditional Empire ceremonial garb, wearing a crown and holding a scepter, his elderly face stern and his eyes intensely focused.
Yang Ming sarcastically thought to himself as he continued watching the projection screen.
The Emperor started his speech:
“Between humans, there should not exist hate that can’t be resolved.
“My warriors of the Empire fight bloody battles merely to seek justice from your nation.
“I actually have no authority to order leniency towards you, as the souls of those the Empire lost to the bug disaster watch over me, making me, the Emperor, feel like I am constantly walking on thorns, unable to find peace!
“But I think, if I were to order an attack on this planet, more humans would disappear into the light of the Galaxy, more hatred would take root among humans, and more humans would unjustly die in subsequent wars.
“The Empire has always aimed to raise our civilization level, advance civilization technology, drive the progress of civilization, and improve the welfare of our people.
“People have many misunderstandings about the Empire, and your nation has spent hundreds of years slandering us, but all these should be viewed by the civilized eyes of the Galaxy’s humans; right and wrong will eventually be judged by public opinion.
“For human civilization to persist long within the Galaxy, if your nation admits that you were the ones who introduced the bugs and the pestilence was caused by you, the Empire will then withdraw its troops and spare the Minter Star.
“Otherwise, I will issue the attack command in fifteen minutes.
“Today, those participating in the retaliatory battle against the New Federation are heroes of the Sherman Empire.”
The image of the Emperor disappeared, and the Imperial Invincible Fleet ceased external broadcasting.
Yang Ming couldn’t help but shake his head.
The Empire didn’t dare to directly destroy Minter City and yet still posed as ‘compassionate and benevolent.’
