At the entrance of Eastern Hospital, Emily had just gotten out of the car when she heard Evelyn Hanson’s exaggerated exclamation coming from the hospital door.
“Emily!” Evelyn rushed over in a few strides, her eyes wide with disbelief, “How has your belly grown so big in just half a month? It’s like a balloon!” She reached out with hesitation, like a curious child, wanting but not daring to touch.
Emily looked down at her own rounded belly. Under the beige maternity dress, the curve was indeed much more pronounced than the last time they met.
She gently caressed her belly, a soft smile subconsciously appeared on her lips: “Didn’t the doctor hint last time that it might be twins?”
“Oh my goodness! Is it really twins?” Evelyn was so excited she almost jumped, then quickly supported Emily, “No way, these two little ones must recognize me as their godmother! I want to be the most doting godmother!”
The two chatted and laughed as they walked inside the hospital, Emily’s pace was somewhat slow. At six months pregnant, her ankles were slightly swollen, making her walk a bit awkward. Just then, sharp laughter came from the direction of the parking lot.
Rainny White was being supported by two girls, walking leisurely as if she were the empress on a parade.

“What did you say?” Evelyn snapped instantly, like a protective hen shielding Emily, “Watch your mouth!”
The ponytailed girl was unyielding: “Did I say it wrong? Isn’t it known that her husband already…”
“Enough!” Emily interjected, her voice was not loud, yet it carried undeniable authority.
She looked calmly at Rainny White, her gaze lingering on Rainny’s belly for a second.
Emily gently tugged on Evelyn’s sleeve: “Let’s go, don’t delay the check-up.” As she turned, she heard Rainny White’s aggravated voice behind her: “What are you showing off for! You are nothing but a tool for the Carter Family to have a child, don’t think you are any nobler than me!”
Evelyn was infuriated, wanting to turn around and argue, but was held back by Emily. As they entered the elevator, Evelyn was still disgruntled: “Emily, are you just going to let them off? That Rainny White clearly…”
“No need.” Emily shook her head, “The happier she is now,” Emily’s voice was soft, yet carried a calm insight, “when the child is born, the day the truth comes out…”
She didn’t continue, but Evelyn had already understood her meaning. The fact that Carlos was still alive would eventually become known. By then, the true parentage of Rainny White’s child would be exposed — it was not Carlos’s child, but Evan Palmer’s.
Thinking of this, Evelyn suddenly felt a lot more cheerful. She could almost envision the reaction of Grace Willow when she found out the truth — that strong-willed woman would likely tear Rainny White apart in fury.
“Emily,” Evelyn couldn’t help but lower her voice to ask, “When might Carlos be returning?”

The door of the examination room opened at that moment, and a nurse poked her head out: “Mrs. Parker, you can come in for your check-up now.”
Emily stood up, casting one last glance toward the elevator.
Rainny White’s silhouette had already disappeared, but the piercing laughter seemed to still echo in the hallway.
Emily let out a soft sigh and turned to walk towards the examination room.
Half an hour later, Emily tidied up her clothes, ready to leave the examination room, when she suddenly stopped, her slender fingers resting on the doorknob. She turned thoughtfully to look at the doctor arranging the examination report.
“Doctor Lee,” her voice was gentle but carried a hint of hesitation, “Is Miss White outside also under your VIP check-up care?”
Doctor Lee looked up: “Yes, Doctor Parker, is there any problem?”
Emily softly advised a few words.
Doctor Lee nodded in understanding.
As Emily walked out, Evelyn immediately came up: “Why so long? Is there something wrong with the baby?”
Her voice was slightly raised due to anxiety.
Emily shook her head, tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear: “No, I just chatted with the doctor for a bit longer.” Her gaze inadvertently swept across the end of the corridor, where Rainny White was surrounded by several girls, still chattering away.
Evelyn followed her gaze and couldn’t help but purse her lips: “That Rainny White really is…”
“Let’s go.” Emily gently interrupted her, linking arms with Evelyn. Subsequently, Rainny White sat on the examination bed in the ultrasound room, her fingers clasping the sheets tightly, eyes fixed intently on the probe in the doctor’s hand.
“Doctor,” she asked urgently, “Is the baby inside me a boy?” Her fingernails unconsciously dug into her palms; her mind filled with the image of Emily’s pronounced pregnant belly — if Emily bore the first grandson of the Carter Family, her child’s status would be threatened.
Doctor Lee frowned slightly, not pausing his actions: “You’re only three months pregnant, it’s too early to tell the gender now.”
Rainny White bit her lip, suddenly pulled a thick envelope from her bag, discreetly tucked it into the doctor’s coat pocket: “Then… the pregnant woman just now, called Emily, is hers a boy or a girl?”
The doctor’s expression shifted slightly; she accepted the envelope and said something.
Rainny White’s face brightened considerably, and as she left, her roommates immediately gathered around her.

“What did the doctor say?”
Rainny White looked delighted.
