Since the publication of this book, the character that has sparked the most controversy is Zhang Jingwen—arrogant, spoiled, and self-righteous.
In reality, women with this sort of temperament are not uncommon, beautiful women from good families who think the whole world should revolve around them.
Honestly, I’m not fond of such women either.
Therefore, some readers get frustrated with this character, and on top of that, seeing the protagonist being written a bit weak in front of her makes them even angrier.
They say to themselves, ’I can’t handle this kind of woman in real life; I don’t need to put up with it in a damn novel, either. I’m not reading this.’
In fact, those readers who are a bit more patient and resilient, if they continue to read on, may actually end up sympathizing with the character of Zhang Jingwen.
After all, she didn’t really do much to the protagonist, but instead suffered a big loss herself, allowing the protagonist to take great advantage of her.
In my original plan, the character Zhang Jingwen had a substantial role, even one of the female leads, and her character would gradually be redeemed later on.
Who knew so many readers wouldn’t like her, so I had to turn her into a supporting character, minimizing her appearances as much as possible.
Another aspect involving acquiring paintings to absorb intangible energy may be hard for some readers to accept, finding it clichéd and mystical, as if turning into a supernatural novel.
My main intention in writing this was to give this otherwise realistic novel a unique flair, because reality is already grim and depressing enough—no need to make novels equally realistic and oppressive.
