American Football: Domination Chapter 489

Everyone expected the Kansas City Chiefs to aim for sideline passes—no one anticipated Lance keeping the ball for a ground attack, and certainly no one expected him to glide through the defense like a ballerina, shaking off tackles with graceful, fluid moves that sliced through the soft, vacant center of the Eagles' defense like a blade.

Graham and Bradham couldn't bring him down, but their quick reactions bought their teammates valuable time.

The Eagles responded rapidly. Though caught off guard, they had contingencies in place—their backfield defense snapped shut like a trap.

Left, right, front, diagonal—white jerseys swarmed Lance like a storm front.

Step-step-step, step-step-step.

Cornerback Darby accelerated. So did safety Corey Graham (a different Graham from the defensive end) and standout Jenkins.

The defense fully engaged, waiting to see how Lance would try to escape.

No one dared underestimate Lance's breakaway ability. No one.

Every nerve was taut.

Lance accelerated toward Jenkins—before Jenkins could even open his arms, Lance slid feet-first into him like a baseball player diving into home.

A collective intake of breath echoed through the stadium.

Lance didn't try to power through. He didn't even wait for the trap to close. After snatching 13 yards, he voluntarily went down at midfield to stop the clock.

People couldn't believe the Chiefs ran a ground play, or that they attacked the middle, or that Lance gave himself up so quickly.

Something was clearly up.

In the midst of confusion, Pederson immediately sensed something was wrong.

As Reid's protégé, Pederson knew Reid wasn't panicking or improvising—this had to be deliberate. A plan. Possibly even rehearsed.

It clicked for Pederson.

Lance dropped to avoid getting wrapped up and wasting time. Now was not the time to play hero. Sure, he might gain another 10 or 20 yards—but unless he scored like against the Steelers, he'd cost precious seconds. And the Eagles were ready for him this time.

From the moment Reid called a run up the middle, he had time in mind.

A surprise rush. Get what you can. Don't overreach. Manage the clock. Stick to the plan.

And Lance executed it perfectly.

Which also meant—Reid had more up his sleeve.

He frantically waved to his defense:

"Spread out! Spread out!"

The Chiefs had already snapped the ball.

Just as Lance hit the turf, the offense sprang back into formation. No celebrations, no delay, no hesitation. While the Eagles were still organizing, Smith read the defense and called the snap.

That was it. Just fast.

The Eagles, reeling, didn't even have time to breathe before another play began.

Smith didn't wait for the pass rush. He backpedaled and immediately let fly to the right.

The football arced through the air.

The Chiefs' five-wide set once again dazzled. On the right, Hunt, Lance, and Kelce crisscrossed, weaving into one another. The Eagles' man defense hadn't even settled when the red blur swarmed like a wave. They couldn't read Smith's throw—he was already in motion.

Lance bumped Darby off course, Kelce turned, completely uncovered, caught the 5-yard pass, got both feet in bounds, then smartly ran out of bounds to stop the clock.

Kelce spun, handed the ball to the ref, and the offense immediately regrouped. Smith was already calling the next snap. The Eagles had to scramble or risk a delay penalty.

Everything was moving at hyperspeed.

Was this… a no-huddle offense?

It couldn't be… right?

No-huddle offense, or "no-huddle spread," means no sideline consultations, no time to gather—just pure tempo and trust in the quarterback to call plays on the fly.

It's explosive in college football, where schemes are simpler and individual talent can shine. But in the NFL? Against elite defenses? It's a gamble.

Only quarterbacks like Peyton Manning, who essentially acted as a second offensive coordinator on the field, could run it to perfection.

Smith? In the Super Bowl? In the final two-minute drill?

But it was happening.

First, Lance disrupted expectations with a run up the gut. As the Eagles scrambled to react, the Chiefs went into no-huddle mode. Speed and simplicity overtook complexity—catch the defense before they could adjust.

They must've practiced this.

Chemistry was the key.

This time, a pass to Hill—protected by Hunt, a clean 6-yard connection. Hill stepped out of bounds immediately.

2nd and 5. First down secured.
