Yoko wasted no time diving back into Super Mario Bros. 2. If the game challenged her to beat it with every character, then that was exactly what she was going to do. She had already conquered it with Princess Peach, proving that her floating ability made precise platforming much easier. Now, it was time to see how the other three played.
She started with Mario, the most balanced character. Without Peach's floating, she had to time her jumps more carefully, but she quickly adapted. Mario's steady movement and decent jump height made him reliable, and she found herself breezing through most of the game without much trouble. His ability to pick up and throw objects faster than Peach was a noticeable advantage, especially during boss fights. When she reached Wart, she beat him with even fewer retries than before. The moment the final credits rolled again, she smiled—one down, two to go.
Next was Luigi, who had an impressively high jump but slightly slippery movement. Adjusting to his floaty physics took a little time, but once Yoko got the hang of it, she found it easier to reach high platforms and avoid enemy attacks. Luigi's exaggerated leap turned out to be an asset in later levels where verticality was key. She particularly enjoyed using him in the sand-digging sections, where his ability to jump high allowed her to bypass some of the more annoying enemy placements. Wart stood no chance—Yoko had mastered his attack patterns by now. With another victory under her belt, she moved on to Toad.
Toad was a completely different experience. He was fast, incredibly strong when picking up objects, and had the best digging speed. However, his jump height was significantly weaker than the others, making certain platforming sections much harder. Yoko had to change her usual approach, playing more aggressively and using speed to her advantage. She learned to rely on quick reflexes, rushing through levels at a breakneck pace. Surprisingly, Toad made some boss fights easier—she could grab and throw objects almost instantly, making quick work of enemies like Birdo and Triclyde. By the time she beat Wart again, she realized that each character had their own strengths, and she had enjoyed mastering all of them.
But just as she thought she had completed everything, a new message appeared on the screen:
"You have proven your skill. The "Very Cool" Character Zabo-man has been unlocked!"
Yoko grin understood the reference "Heh Very Cool character indeed"
She rushed to the character selection screen, and sure enough, there he was—Zabo-man, standing confidently alongside Mario, Luigi, Toad, and Peach. Zabo-man felt different from the rest. His stats were like Mario but slightly inferior, but he had one unique ability that set him apart—he could double jump. Yoko's eyes widened as she pressed the jump button a second time mid-air and watched him soar even higher. "This is insane! Double jumping changes everything!" she exclaimed. With this new skill, previously challenging sections became a breeze. She could easily recover from mistimed jumps, bypass difficult enemy placements, and reach areas that were normally only accessible with Luigi or Peach.
Speedrunning the game with Zabo-man felt like unlocking a secret mode meant for expert players. She tore through levels, chaining together double jumps, dodging enemies, and making quick work of bosses. Wart barely even had a chance to fight back—Yoko was too fast, too skilled, too experienced and too determined.
As the credits rolled for the final time, she leaned back with a satisfied grin. She had done it. She had beaten Super Mario Bros. 2 with every character, unlocked a Zabo-man, and mastered the game in its entirety. This had been one of the most enjoyable games she had ever played, and she knew she'd be coming back to it again and again.
She turned off her console, stretched her arms, and smiled to herself. "That was amazing. I hope more games are released soon, especially ones with cool and great female protagonists one. It felt so refreshing to play as Peach and see a game where she wasn't just waiting to be rescued. I wish there were even more games where I could play as a heroine who is just as capable as the guys."
