As a Grey Knight In Naruto Chapter 12

"Preparation means nothing if fear keeps your hands from moving."

The tunnel was narrow. Hajime's chest scraped the dirt above him, his elbows dragged along the floor as he inched forward, and the darkness pressed in from every side. Even with chakra reinforcing his arms and breathing kept low and steady, claustrophobia crept along his spine like cold water. The scent of wet stone and earth was sharp, and the occasional pop of compressed air made him freeze.

But he kept going.

A faint, salty breeze wafted toward him. Hajime exhaled through his nose. He was close now.

He'd dug this path over three nights, timing each excavation between midnight and dawn, constantly reinforcing the tunnel with chakra compression. It ran from the forest edge near his hidden base to the underside of one of the old port warehouses along the coast—one now swarming with Gato's hired men.

Hajime reached the end and activated a tiny viewing port—no larger than a coin. Chakra flowed from his fingers into the wall, gently rotating the soil until it was transparent. It revealed the cracked, wooden floorboards above.

He waited.

Boots thudded above. Voices followed.

"Boss said to tie 'em up again. Kid's been coughing."

"Long as he's alive. We're not getting paid for corpses."

Two rough-looking men stomped past, one carrying a battered spear, the other chewing a strip of dried fish. They laughed, their voices coarse.

Hajime's hands curled into fists beneath the earth.

He angled the peephole upward. Between the gaps, he saw several children huddled in the corner of the warehouse—pale, frightened, and gagged. One of them looked familiar. Koji. So it was true.

Gato's men were taking children now.

He fought the rising bile in his throat.

Then another voice.

"They're frightened. You should bring them water."

Polite. Gentle. Smooth.

The air shifted. The mercs paused.

"Y-yeah. Course. Right away."

A figure stepped into view—tall, slender, dressed in dark robes. A porcelain mask covered the face. Their movements were graceful. Silent. Icy mist drifted slightly from the edges of their sleeves.

Haku.

Even without full confirmation, Hajime's heart knew.

There was no killing intent. No cruelty. But the room tensed in his presence. The mercenaries acted cautious, almost afraid. And the captives—they stared, wide-eyed, uncertain whether he was protector or predator.

Hajime lowered the chakra feed and slowly backed away.

He moved like a shadow through the tunnel, carefully pressing his weight to avoid collapse. Every heartbeat echoed like thunder. One wrong sound could mean discovery—and death.

Ten minutes later, he emerged from the forest floor, sealing the tunnel behind him with a press of his palm and a soft pulse of chakra.

The forest felt too loud now. The birdsong, the wind, the rustling leaves—all jarring after the silence of the tunnel.

Hajime sprinted back to his base.

The underground chamber was cooler now. He lit the main lantern, sat at his desk, and unrolled a scroll.

His hand trembled for a moment. He exhaled, steadied it, and began to write:

Field Notes: Port Warehouse Observation

Hostages confirmed. Children.

Mercenaries present: ~6 visible. Armed. Poorly trained.

Haku confirmed. Passive, polite. High threat level.

Zabuza: Unknown. Possibly inbound. Mercs mentioned a "mist-nin" arriving soon.

Timeline: Action required within 3 days.

He sat back.

Haku was here. Which meant Zabuza may not be far behind. Hajime couldn't face both. Not yet. He didn't even know if he could face Haku alone.

But the children...

He glanced toward a small wooden token on his desk, Koji's carving. A little rabbit, rough but earnest.

He stood and walked to the storage alcove. Packed a ration. A water flask. A spare tunic. His notebook. Chalk. Kunai.

He would have to return. Soon.

But this time, he wouldn't just be observing.

This time, he'd be planning their escape.

And if fate turned cruel?

Then he'd be ready to fight.

End of Chapter 11: Beneath the Boards.
