Shen Feihong seemed to be in a real rush. The next morning, when Lu Jiang was cooking breakfast, he heard a knock at the door. He adjusted the flames of the stove to prevent a fire, came out of the kitchen, and opened the door to find Shen Feihong smiling cheerfully, yet with slightly bloodshot eyes. Shen had pushed an old bicycle all the way here, appearing rather fatigued.
"Hey, Brother Lu Jiang!" Shen Feihong blurted out without changing his expressions.
Although he addressed Feng Qingxue as his elder sister, that was his relationship with her aunt. However, when he inquired about the location of the Lu Family, he also learned about Lu Jiang’s details, so he dared not call him elder brother anymore.
Lu Jiang was much older than him, so it was fitting to call him ’brother’. This made Shen Feihong feel a bit helpless.
Lu Jiang stepped aside, and opened the other big door, "Come in."
The child had gone to town yesterday to get pictures taken, and had a big bowl of egg noodles in a state-run restaurant. After playing for one day, he was overly excited and had a hard time falling asleep. He only went to bed late at night, so he wasn’t up yet, and the courtyard was exceptionally silent, except for the occasional crowing of chickens and quacking of ducks.
Shen Feihong looked around, "Brother Lu, your family is living a good life."
The housing was neat, the floor clean, and red chillies and corn cobs were hung along the eaves and the walls. It was an indication of prosperity.
After hearing this, Lu Jiang smiled and invited him into the house.
As her breast milk was inadequate, Feng Qingxue was feeding Xibao formula milk. When she saw Shen Feihong enter, she said, "Brother Feihong, have you had your meal?"
"No, I rushed over early in the morning, afraid you might change your mind!" Shen Feihong scratched his head, putting the box he had brought on the table, "Elder sister, I know women like jewellery, so I brought some along. Some are expensive, some are cheap. You can choose whatever you like, and even keep them, as long as you give me the grains."
Feng Qingxue handed over Xibao to Lu Jiang to hold, and opened the box herself.
It was a box brimming with dazzling jewellery.
Made mostly of jade, pearls and jewels, it also contained a small number of gold and silver ornaments of varying quality.
"Ah!" Xibao happily tossed aside the milk bottle and extended his upper body, wishing to lean onto the table. Lu Jiang was aware of his behaviour, so he held him close to the wooden box, and the little guy grasped a string of coral court beads.
"Do you like it, Xibao?" Feng Qingxue smiled, and picked out the best pieces of jewellery from the box.
She wasn’t really interested in the ordinary pieces.
A vibrant pink diamond ring, a thick green jade bracelet, a pair of Orient Pearl earrings, an exquisite jade snuff bottle, a mutton-fat jade brand, a pair of white jade twist bracelets, a silver hairpin inlaid with pearls and jade, and a pair of gold filigree bracelets encrusted with East Pearl.
"Add these coral beads that Xibao has taken, that’s all." Feng Qingxue lost interest in the rest.
However, Lu Jiang single-handedly held Xibao, while his other hand picked up a gold phoenix hairpin inlaid with rubies and pearls from the box, "Also add this hairpin."
Seeing the colourful hairpin, Xibao immediately gave up on the court beads for it.
Shen Feihong enthusiastically said, "Brother Lu, elder sister, you both truly have an eye for gems, picking out the best pieces of jewellery from the box. I spent quite a lot of money and grains to purchase these."
Feng Qingxue just gave a slight smile, "Stop beating around the bush, brother. Just quote a price."
"Alright, elder sister, since you get to the point, so will I," Shen Feihong pondered for a moment, "Fifty kilos of cornmeal and twenty kilos of white flour." Besides the gold hairpin and gold bracelet, the other pieces did not cost much money, and there was nothing to say about the grains.
