Feng Qingxue, having nothing to do, greeted her doctor and went to assist in a ward with patients.
The hospital was not crowded with people giving birth, unless their labor was complicated, so the obstetrics and gynecology department was fairly empty. However, there were many children with cold and fever in the pediatrics department, taken there by adults. Feng Qingxue assisted Dr. Zhao and learned a lot from the experience.
Town and city workers could get medical treatment for free at the hospital, but it was not necessarily the case for non-employees.
Even so, the fees for a worker’s family member were still quite low.
After a busy half-day, things quieted down in the afternoon.
On Saturday afternoons, the doctors would finish their shifts early, going to work only an hour after lunch.
Feng Qingxue got home earlier than usual. As soon as she walked through the door, she noticed Xibao’s grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Cheng, squatting in the yard, clapping their hands to encourage Xibao. Xibao, dressed only in diapers after being freed from his winter clothes, was taking shaky steps towards them, falling to the ground as he tried to pick up his pace when he was close to his grandparents.
The little tyke didn’t cry when he fell. Noticing no one was coming to pick him up, he quickly picked himself up and continued his trek, finally falling into Mrs. Cheng’s arms with a joyful grin.
His weight was not insignificant, and the impact knocked Mrs. Cheng onto her backside.
"Oh my, my precious little darling, this old lady’s bones can’t handle your energetic bumps!" Mrs. Cheng laughed as she brushed the dirt off him and stood up, taking his chubby hand, "Come, grandma will take you to have lunch. Pork liver puree."
Feng Qingxue intervened, "Grandma, let me do it!"
Mrs. Cheng laughed and replied, "I can still handle carrying a bowl of pork liver puree. You go and play, don’t interrupt me bonding with Xibao."
Lu Xibao seemed to be sulking because he didn’t see his mother during the day. He obediently followed Mrs. Cheng into the room, but he kept looking back over his shoulder, sneaking glances at Feng Qingxue, as if to say, "You come pick me up, you come pick me up."
A mother knows her child best. Feng Qingxue laughed and picked him up, "Have you missed mommy, Xibao?"
She kissed his chubby cheek, and the little fellow immediately broke into a big grin. He nuzzled into her face, smearing her with the dirt from his cheek, happily repeating, "Mommy! Mommy! Mommy!"
His chubby arms wrapped around his mother’s neck, projecting a scene of incredible affection.
"You’re definitely more attached to your mother!" Mrs. Cheng patted Xibao’s chubby bottom, "Alright, let your mom feed you the pork liver puree. Grandma will go and prepare a pig’s head for dinner."
After a while, Lu Tianjun arrived by bike and he was invited to stay as well.
Every Saturday afternoon, they finished school a few hours earlier than usual so that students who lived far away would have time to travel home.
Mr. Cheng added, "What do you gain by going home? Couldn’t you just spend the night here with us? Tomorrow morning you can accompany your aunt back, and take some pig’s head meat to your grandparents. Be practical, young man!"
Lu Tianjun laughed and said, "Grandpa, then I will take you up on your offer!"
As the eldest son and grandson of the Lu family, Lu Tianjun had been informed by his father about their relationship with Cheng Baoguo.
Mr. Cheng was very fond of Lu Tianjun. Seeing that Xibao was ready to go out and play as soon as he was full, the two of them took Xibao by the hand and headed out, while Feng Qingxue and Mrs. Cheng stayed home to prepare the pig’s head in an earthen oven.
