Uncle Lu beside her slapped her on the back, “You don’t have far to go, Nan Fei has got a long way to travel.”
“But I want to ride a bike too!”
“If you don’t buy me one, I won’t study hard for college.”
Uncle Lu sneered, “As if you could get in.”
Lu Qingtian’s obstinacy flared up, and she boldly declared, “Just you wait! I’ll get into college and show you.”
“If you’ve got the guts, do it! I bet you can’t.”
“I’m going home for dinner, and I will not help you sell meat.” Defiantly finding an excuse to leave, Lu Qingtian swiftly ran away.
Uncle Lu cursed angrily, “You damned hare, come back here, there’s no escaping.”
He yelled quickly, but Lu Qingtian ran even faster and quickly disappeared out of sight.
The vendors around them and Zhang Fengmei had a good laugh, while Nan Fei watched quietly, realizing her parents’ demeanor had changed since they started doing business in town.
“Sister, have an apple.” Zhuanzhuan handed over a peeled apple, “We’ll have dinner when we get home!”
“Thank you!” Nan Fei took a bite. Though it was not very crisp, it was especially sweet. She remembered when they were poor and could not afford fruit for an entire year. Back then, if they wanted fresh product, they had to grow their own.
They planted vegetables, cucumbers, tomatoes and the like in their vegetable garden. In the hot summer, the cucumbers would dry out and stop growing. So, she would take her younger siblings to fetch water for watering, which made the cucumbers grow rapidly.
“Mom bought this.” Zhuanzhuan explained, “This is the first time she’s bought fruit voluntarily! She used to never buy any, even if we asked.”
“We didn’t have money back then!” Nan Fei munched on the apple, sitting on the small stool at the stall.
“Yeah! Thanks to you, sister.” Zhuanzhuan remarked appreciatively.
“Don’t say that. It’s the effort of all of us.”
This time, Zhuanzhuan didn’t respond, just kept her head down so that Nan Fei couldn’t figure out what she was thinking.
The green off-road vehicle snaked its way through the endless desert, forming a huge convoy that stretched as far as the eye could see.
Occasionally, a few white or red cars could be seen among the line, adding a hint of vigor to the desolate scene.
