"No, no, I’m just...a bit nervous." Jane Quinlan frowned apologetically.
She really was nervous.
But it was actually the first time she knew that Kay Forrest’s father had trouble with his legs.
He had never mentioned it before.
"I’m just a cripple, you don’t need to be nervous seeing me.
Treat me as you would any ordinary disabled person." Grayson Forrest’s words made Jane Quinlan even more nervous.
Was Kay Forrest’s dad joking with her?
But the joke wasn’t funny at all.
She didn’t understand why both father and son had such a unique way of joking.
Kay pointed to the nutritional supplements the servant had placed aside.
"Jane didn’t know what you liked, so she just bought a little of everything.
Just eat whatever you like." Kay gave Jane a nudge: "Why are you standing there? Come and sit."
Grayson gave Kay a disapproving look before saying to Jane, "Please sit, Miss Quinlan."
Jane followed Kay nervously and sat down on the sofa.
Kay handed her a banana.
After taking it and peeling it, Jane stood up and offered it to Grayson: "Uncle, here, eat this."
Grayson looked up at her, his brow raising, the girl, not bad.
He took the banana and started eating.
Jane returned to Kay’s side and handed her another one: "Peel one for me too."
Jane turned and glared at Kay behind Grayson’s back.
Kay let out a laugh: "Just kidding, you eat it, I’ll peel my own."
Jane put down the banana without eating, sitting a bit more upright.
Grayson, noticing her uncomfortable demeanor, asked her: "Do you feel constrained coming here?"
Jane smiled, not lying: "It is a bit unfamiliar to me.
This is the first time in my life I’ve entered such a beautiful villa."
Grayson laughed heartily, the girl’s honesty was refreshing.
"Who else is in your family?"
"In my family, there are my grandparents and my parents."
"Hm, what does your family do?"
Jane bit her lip: "We are just an ordinary and average family.
My mother is a retired elementary school teacher.
My father works in a steel company as a worker and hasn’t retired yet."
Kay impatently said: "What’s the deal, old man? Are you checking her background or hoping I’d find a woman of matching social status?
At the doorstep earlier, Jane said she was especially worried you’d chase her away with a check."
"Oh? How so, do I look like that kind of person?"
Jane clenched her teeth, that damn Kay, why did he have to say everything.
She waved her hands: "No, no, I was just joking with Kay."
"Really? Then why did you tell me that if my dad gives you a check, you plan to give him a discount, choosing the check over me?"
Grayson saw Jane pinch Kay, and Kay winced in pain.
"What’s this, plotting to murder your husband?"
Nelson Avery gritted his teeth, turned to him and bared his teeth in a smile, squeezing out a few words through her clenched teeth: "Shut up, will you."
Kay laughed out loud, but sure enough, he said nothing more.
A servant approached Grayson’s side and bowed: "Master, dinner is ready."
Grayson nodded: "Okay, Miss Quinlan, come join us for dinner."
Jane promptly stood up: "Okay, Uncle."
Kay stood and pushed Grayson’s wheelchair forward.
The three of them came to the dining table and sat down.
Grayson took the main seat, Kay sat to his right, and Jane sat to Kay’s right.
Seeing the table filled with all sorts of fancy dishes, Jane felt as though she was truly opening her eyes to a new world.
For the first time, she realized that some people’s home meals were indeed as extravagant as in idol dramas.
"Miss Quinlan, I heard from Kay that you work at a newspaper, right?"
"How do you find it, and do you have any plans for the future?"
"I...haven’t thought about it yet."
Do wealthy people require their children’s partners to have a life plan?
Then she certainly doesn’t measure up.
"Dad, she’s already nervous, stop scaring her," Kay interjected.
Grayson gave Kay a disapproving glance; the boy really didn’t understand him.
It wasn’t just his girlfriend who felt nervous.
It was his first time bringing a girlfriend home for dinner; he felt a little awkward too.
The quiet dinner felt off, and that’s why he started the conversation.
"What’s wrong, Miss Quinlan? Do my questions make you uncomfortable?"
"Not at all, Uncle. I just...I’m the type who doesn’t plan ahead in life.
I’m more of a ’break the pot if it’s cracked’ sort of person.
I only think of countermeasures when I encounter problems."
