Not far from the old Gu Mansion, there’s a small marketplace selling mountain goods and local specialties.
The Maybach pulled up steadily at the entrance to the marketplace, and the two of them got out of the car.
"This marketplace has been around since I was a child. It’s always lively, partly because it’s close to the old town."
Gu Moqian held Ji Wei’s hand as they walked inside.
On both sides of the cobblestone path, various stalls were set up, and each vendor was loudly calling out to attract customers.
Ji Wei was visiting such a place for the first time; everything felt novel to her.
In no time, she was holding a stick of sugar-coated hawthorn in her left hand and a box of glutinous rice cakes in her right, eating happily.
Gu Moqian skillfully found the famous old shop selling osmanthus cakes.
"Here you go. Come back again next time!" The pastry chef called out loudly while handing the neatly wrapped square cakes, tied with oil paper and string, to Gu Moqian.
Gu Moqian took them and nodded. When he turned around, he saw Ji Wei biting into a sugar-coated hawthorn, her cheeks puffed out as she ate.
Noticing the man suddenly staring at her, Ji Wei froze for a moment, then held the hawthorn stick out to Gu Moqian and mumbled with her mouth full, "Take a bite, it’s fragrant, crispy, and really delicious!"
Gu Moqian’s gaze lingered on the woman’s lips, glistening from the hawthorn’s syrup, and his eyes narrowed slightly, but he didn’t move.
Ji Wei finally swallowed the piece in her mouth and added, "Come on, just try it! Even a CEO who’s above the mundane world should experience the joy of a common street snack once in a while. It’s a unique kind of fun!"
Gu Moqian declined decisively.
The thought of having oil all over his mouth... no, absolutely not.
Ji Wei could obviously see that he cared about his image and didn’t push him further. She continued eating contentedly on her own.
By the time they finished walking down the whole street, Ji Wei had already sampled almost every snack in the marketplace.
It was the first time in her life she’d eaten so freely and happily. On their way back, she even packed a bunch of treats, declaring she’d take some back for Duoduo.
On the drive back to the Gu Mansion, Ji Wei spotted a pharmacy and suddenly called out to the driver, "Could you please stop the car for a moment?"
Gu Moqian looked at her with surprise. "Why stop?"
"I... I have a bit of a cold and want to buy some medicine." Ji Wei couldn’t possibly admit she was going to buy a pregnancy test, so she quickly made up an excuse.
Gu Moqian raised an eyebrow.
She looked full of energy, not at all like she was sick.
"I’ll go with you to buy it."
At that moment, the driver had already pulled over to the side of the street. Gu Moqian placed a hand on the car door, ready to step out, but Ji Wei hurriedly stopped him. "No need! I’m just buying some cold medicine; I’ll be back in no time!"
Without giving Gu Moqian much time to react, Ji Wei quickly hopped out of the car.
Ji Wei climbed back into the car, slightly out of breath, holding a small bag in her hand.
Gu Moqian glanced at it; sure enough, the packaging looked like cold medicine.
Still, he couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off. But Gu Moqian didn’t press the matter and gestured for the driver to continue.
Ji Wei maintained a calm demeanor as she turned her head and glanced at the man beside her. Seeing that he didn’t seem suspicious, she quietly let out a sigh of relief.
Thank goodness for her quick thinking—she had hidden the pregnancy test inside the cold medicine bag and managed to avoid any suspicion.
Back at the Gu Mansion, Ji Wei first stopped by the annex to drop off the things she’d bought, then headed to the main hall with Gu Moqian.
Old Madam Gu was chatting casually with the older relatives of the Gu Family.
When the two entered, Old Madam Gu immediately called them over to sit by her side.
"Great-Grandma, I brought you some osmanthus cake from your favorite shop," Gu Moqian said warmly, handing her the package.
"Our Moqian is always the best! You know exactly what this old lady likes. How thoughtful of you," Old Madam Gu said with a pleased smile as she accepted the package.
"You’ve doted on him since he was a child, and now it’s his turn to pay it back with filial piety," chimed in one of the elders nearby.
"If the two of them could give you a little great-grandchild soon, that would make things truly perfect."
Ji Wei secretly rolled her eyes. She had just bought a pregnancy test, and now they were already starting to drop hints about having a baby?
