Rebecca Quentin was leaning against Howard Geoffrey’s firm chest, her voice choked with sorrow. "I don’t care how deep your feelings for Christine Quinn are. Since you involved me and made me so many unverified promises, you owe me an answer about her."
Howard kissed Becca’s eyelashes, his voice tender. "Silly girl, haven’t I already given you my answer?"
Rebecca abruptly looked up into Howard’s deep, unfathomable eyes and pouted. "When did you give me an answer? Since we came back from the island, you’ve been ignoring me. Then you left with Christine. You never said anything to me. Even when you called me last night, you didn’t seem to want to say a few words to me over the phone..."
Rebecca huffed angrily. "If you really care about me, what could be more important than appeasing me?" In front of him, she was always short-tempered for no reason, simply because she felt so insecure deep down.
"Silly girl... Just watch the TV."
"Watch TV now? I’m questioning you!" Rebecca raised her voice in anger.
Howard immediately let go of Rebecca, walked to the bedside table, picked up the TV remote, and turned on the TV.
Rebecca was filled with anger, but when the sound from the TV reached her ears, she stared at the television screen in disbelief, frozen in place.
"Breaking news: ’Skytop’ Group’s CEO, Howard Geoffrey, held a press conference last night in T City, announcing the cancellation of his engagement to his long-time girlfriend, Christine Quinn. According to insiders, Howard and Christine’s relationship had fractured several months ago..."
After a moment, Rebecca finally came to her senses. She looked blankly at Howard. "Is this... real?" So this was why he had left with Christine that day...
Howard approached Rebecca, wrapping his arms around her, his voice steady and firm. "It’s over between her and me."
Rebecca kept shaking her head in disbelief. "But your relationship with her was so deep..."
Howard’s voice grew husky. "Becca, even a thousand Christines couldn’t compare to one of you."
"Really?" Rebecca still felt as though she were dreaming; everything seemed so unreal, yet she didn’t want to doubt him.
"Becca, don’t ask about my past with Christine. I promise you, from now on, no one will come between us."
Rebecca actually understood that Howard had hidden many things about his past with Christine from her. But right now, she didn’t want to ask about anything, nor did she want to delve into their past. From the moment she chose to be with him, she only wanted to be with him properly and not concern herself with anything else.
Skyler Jones was leaning back in his chair, resting his forehead on his hand in deep thought, his eyes darker than usual.
KNOCK KNOCK. Skyler’s newly promoted secretary walked into his office and said respectfully, "Mr. Jones, Miss Quinn is here."
Because Christine Quinn had visited "Oversky" a few days prior, and given her stunning beauty, the secretary recognized her immediately.
Seeming indifferent to the visitor, Skyler Jones answered lightly, "Let her in."
Not long after the secretary left, Christine Quinn walked in.
Skyler glanced at Christine Quinn, his tone exceptionally cold, a coldness he rarely displayed to others. "What are you here for?"
Christine Quinn, looking utterly dejected, stared into Skyler’s eyes without focus and stammered, "Haven’t you seen this morning’s news?"
"Howard has announced the cancellation of our engagement."
Skyler tilted his head, casually lit a cigarette, took a drag, and slowly exhaled the smoke before responding, "You’re that disappointed?"
Tears were already streaming from Christine’s eyes. She suppressed her sobs, her body trembling like a leaf on a branch, ready to fall at any moment.
The look Skyler cast at Christine grew significantly colder, his tone carrying a dangerous warning. "I dislike women crying in front of me. Have you forgotten?"
Christine chuckled coldly. "How could I forget your preferences, Skyler? I’m the plaything you’ve toyed with in the palm of your hand, the one who can never escape your control in this lifetime. How would I dare act presumptuously in front of you?"
Christine’s tone was laced with sarcasm and a deep, abhorrent disgust.
Skyler extinguished his cigarette, his voice softening slightly. "Come here..."
