COTE : There is Something Wrong With Hikigaya Chapter 38

Being in the student council is not an easy job. In fact, it's a thankless task that takes a lot of effort.

At this stage, aside from those who genuinely want to serve the students, most people who join the council have strong personal motives.

Three weeks have passed since the start of the semester, and by now, quite a few students must have noticed that this school is unusual. Some, like Haruno, must have even figured out the truth.

So, every student who came to the student council interview today—including Hikigaya himself—had a clear goal in mind. The same could be said for students from other classes.

"Everyone has the same idea. They join the student council for the advantages it might bring in the future," Hikigaya said while watching Haruno's expression.

"There's nothing wrong with that. After all, they've all realized the student council plays an important role in this school. It's because of the authority given by the school, right?"

Hikigaya nodded, then shook his head. "Yes, but what's more important is the mission assigned by the school. This school created the 'S-System' and other rules to cultivate the best students. Naturally, the student council's mission is the same. So, Yukinoshita, if the student council wants to fulfill this mission, what role should it play in the process?"

"I have no idea~"

Hikigaya expected that response from Haruno, so he continued, "An enforcer. The council is supposed to carry out the school's policies from the administration level down to the students. Normally, that would make sense. But what if there's a problem when these policies are put into action?"

Haruno's expression finally changed. Her gaze toward Hikigaya was now filled with admiration.

Hikigaya didn't expect Haruno to answer, so he took a sip of coffee to moisten his throat, then looked at her seriously and spoke slowly.

"So... I believe the true role of the student council isn't about gaining special information or benefits in advance. It's about its ability to correct things."

At first, Hikigaya's words seemed confusing. That was because most people only saw a circle in front of them, but they failed to realize that what they were looking at was actually a sphere.

Haruno, however, was clearly someone who could see the sphere.

Clap! Clap! Clap!

Haruno clapped her hands, the smile on her face growing even brighter.

"I knew I wasn't wrong about you, Hikigaya-kun. You're really sharp."

A meaningful smile formed at the corner of her lips.

"That's right. Everyone only sees the advantages and benefits the student council can offer them. But they fail to realize its true role in this school and for the students."

"But your way of thinking is dangerous."

Hikigaya let out a sigh.

"Oh? Could it be that Hikigaya-kun has already guessed what I want to do?" Haruno asked with a teasing smile.

Hikigaya shook his head. "I don't know. I just have a bad feeling about it."

In reality, Hikigaya was lying again.

Just as Haruno said, the real role of the student council is its ability to correct things. Every policy is designed to be perfect, but when put into practice, unexpected issues always arise. Naturally, there needs to be a way to address these problems.

The student council exists as that solution—to handle the problems that arise during implementation.

On a practical level, this could mean overseeing student evaluations, adjusting grading policies, or refining exam rules.

That's what Hikigaya meant by correction. Realizing this sent a chill down his spine. This was also why he didn't bring it up during the interview.

The role of student council president was, in a way, a symbol of power. Every decision made would influence all students, even if only subtly.

As for Haruno... With her love for stirring up trouble and her unpredictable nature, Hikigaya could already foresee a terrifying outcome.

"Heh heh, looks like Hikigaya-kun is really good at playing dumb while secretly being sharp!" Haruno seemed to be in a great mood. She even moved closer to Hikigaya and started humming.

"Yukinoshita-san, please watch your manners!" Hikigaya stiffened.

"We're already bound by fate, yet you're still keeping things so formal," Haruno said, clearly unhappy with Hikigaya's attitude. "

You know, every time you call me 'Yukinoshita, Yukinoshita,' it really bothers me."

She suddenly smiled.

"I prefer being called Haruno rather than my last name~ From now on, just call me that."

Don't call me Yukinoshita—call me Haruno.

For a moment, Hikigaya felt like he had been pulled into a distant memory. At some point in the past, he had heard these exact words from a woman who looked just like the one in front of him.

"Huh? Why are you spacing out? Don't tell me you're so touched by 'calling a girl by her first name for the first time in your life' that you're about to cry?" Haruno waved her hands in front of his face, eyes wide in mock surprise.

"How—how is that even possible?!" Hikigaya snapped back to reality, his face heating up.

"Komachi was my first!"

"I knew it! I should call the police right now—you siscon!"

"Haruno, there's nothing illegal about an older brother loving his little sister!" Hikigaya declared with confidence.

"Ha~ru~no~, why did you say my name so naturally on the first try?!" Haruno crossed her arms, pretending to shudder.

Hikigaya almost coughed up blood from frustration. "I didn't drag it out all creepy like that! And you were the one who asked me to call you that!"

"Hmph! You're probably feeling really smug right now, aren't you? I bet you are!" Haruno puffed up her cheeks in frustration.

Hikigaya opened his mouth but didn't know what to say.

Because you should never try to reason with a woman.

"Tch~ Hikigaya-kun, your reactions are so awkward and innocent! I'm putting on this whole act, and you're just standing there ignoring it!" Haruno sighed, clearly annoyed.

But the next second, her expression turned serious. "Let's talk about something more important."

Her sudden shift in tone left Hikigaya speechless. Every time he saw this, it reminded him just how mysterious girls could be.

"About the student council interviews—you've seen it yourself. Katsuragi from our class, Ichinose and Kanzaki from Class B... they're all top students with natural advantages in both academics and other areas. I'll give you a little hint—the competition is fierce, and only one or two spots are available. Your chances are pretty slim."

Haruno sighed.
