COTE : There is Something Wrong With Hikigaya Chapter 43

The little quiz at the end of the month was already forgotten by students like the idiot duo, who were now looking forward to the upcoming month after the weekend.

"Ugh, why are there still two days left? I only have 2,000 points left! There's no way that's enough!"

Yamauchi complained to Ike and the others while discussing what games to buy next month and where to have fun after school. Meanwhile, Ayanokouji listened silently, like a loyal follower to the 'leader' of their small group, occasionally nodding along just enough to show he was there.

The idiot duo wasn't an exception; their attitude was a reflection of Class D as a whole. Many students thought, "Since we'll be getting 100,000 private points next month, we should spend everything this month." They all planned to have a blast over the weekend and welcome the arrival of May with excitement.

The whole class was relaxed, chatting about their weekend plans, and even complaining about having too many points—what a nice problem to have. Hikigaya took all of this in.

"Yeah... it's like their last meal before an execution."

Despite the cheerful atmosphere, Hikigaya found it ironic and depressing.

He glanced at his seatmate, the ice-cold Horikita. At first, he had misunderstood her. Since she was placed in Class D, he assumed she was one of those students who pretended to study hard despite having bad grades.

But after nearly a month of observation, he realized that Horikita was not only serious about her studies but also one of the few students who strictly followed class rules. She had no friends, no social life, and no entertainment. She was always alone, living a routine life between the dorm and school. She never went to places of leisure and seemed capable of enduring boredom and loneliness while immersing herself in her own world.

In her, Hikigaya saw something all too familiar.

It was already after school, but Horikita hadn't left yet. She was still buried in her thoughts, trying to solve the last difficult problem from the morning quiz.

"She really refuses to give up, huh?"

Her stubbornness even made Hikigaya feel inferior.

Next month, the truth about the school would be revealed. At first, Hikigaya felt indifferent about the potential disaster awaiting Class D—he even found it amusing. But now, he felt a little worried about this stubborn girl.

The last question on the quiz was clearly an extra challenge meant to identify top students. The fact that Horikita was this fixated on it showed how highly she valued her academic abilities and how much pride she had in herself.

When she learned the truth about Class D, would her pride be able to withstand the crushing reality?

Hikigaya knew all too well what it felt like to have something he was most proud of shattered into nothing. It was a miserable feeling.

...

The last weekend of the month flew by, and soon, a new week and a new month arrived.

May 1st.

Like always, Hikigaya arrived at the classroom. The Class D classroom was as noisy as ever. He could hear the chatter from far down the hallway. The girls were gathered in groups, talking about celebrity gossip, beauty influencers, and other trendy topics. The idiot duo was still making ridiculous jokes and telling inappropriate stories.

It seemed like an ordinary day for Class D. But the moment Hikigaya stepped into the classroom, he noticed something was off.

The girls seemed lively in their conversations, but they kept glancing at their phones, frowning, then pretending nothing was wrong as they put them away.

As for the boys... checking the time, Hikigaya realized something unusual—students who usually cut it close to being late had arrived early today. Even Sudou, the infamous king of tardiness and skipping class, was already here. Not only that, he wasn't even sleeping at his desk.

Of course, there were exceptions.

"Huh? Ken? You're actually early on a Monday?"

The idiot duo still arrived at the last minute, sporting dark circles under their eyes. It was obvious they'd been up all night over the weekend. They didn't seem to notice the strange atmosphere in the classroom.

Everyone kept glancing at the classroom door, as if anxiously waiting for someone to arrive.

The tension was obvious, yet everyone pretended not to notice. They even acted like everything was normal.

Even Horikita, who usually didn't care about class affairs, seemed distracted. Her furrowed brows hinted at the unease she was feeling inside.

The weather today was just as bad. The sky had been covered in thick clouds since morning, as if warning of an impending storm.

In the entire Class D classroom, only Hikigaya remained calm—perhaps even indifferent. Well, maybe Koenji, too.

He unlocked his phone and checked his balance—757,400 private points. Over time, he had earned a little extra from his club activities. Adding that to what he had left from the beginning of the year and previous earnings, he had managed to save a decent amount.

And that number hadn't changed.

Even as the classroom door opened and Chabashira-sensei stepped in with an unusually serious expression, his private point balance remained the same.

Which meant...

The private points for May were exactly as expected—Zero.

If the school's system failure is ruled out, then there's only one possibility left. Thinking of this, Hikigaya couldn't help but feel a sense of absurdity.

Today, Chabashira-sensei stood at the front of the class, exuding an unusually serious and cold demeanor. Most students could sense the change, but there were always a few oblivious fools—or maybe just those who were too used to acting recklessly. Ike, for example, had that "I'll lighten the mood" expression on his face.

"Whoa, sensei, you look terrible. Could it be that your magic period has arrived? The great magician Chabashira Dumbledore makes her grand entrance!"

Ike burst into laughter, clearly thinking he was hilarious. Unfortunately for him, aside from Yamauchi chuckling in agreement, the rest of the class remained completely unresponsive. Or rather, they had long since gotten used to Ike and Yamauchi's so-called "jokes."

"What a pair of funny little monkeys," Hikigaya couldn't help but mutter.

These two "monkeys" loved throwing around what they thought were hilarious dirty jokes, completely ignoring the situation or the audience. Most of the time, their jokes were crude and inappropriate, yet they always acted like comedic geniuses afterward.

The most ridiculous part? They actually believed their humor would charm the girls and make them more popular.

What kind of insane logic is that?

Do they think they're in some kind of **** or adult game world?

Just look around at everyone's disgusted faces, you idiots!

Meanwhile, Chabashira-sensei, being the mature and composed adult she was, completely ignored Ike's borderline harassment and continued speaking as if nothing had happened. "Before the morning assembly starts, does anyone have any questions?"

The moment she finished, several students who had been trying to keep calm couldn't hold back anymore, raising their hands eagerly.
