Soon someone came up and dragged the bloodied woman away.
Someone ran over quickly, and upon seeing the woman covered in blood, he shouted, “Cuicui!”
On hearing the name, the woman’s heart, as she lay there bloodied and barely hanging on to life, clenched in agony.
“Brother Aniu…”
How did he come, how did he come.
She wanted to yell at him to leave, to leave quickly.
This house was full of madmen, all of them, they weren’t human, nor did they consider her life as anything significant.
Aniu and Cuicui were childhood sweethearts, innocent and pure, but their families were poor. Cuicui thought of coming out to work, earn some silver to improve her family’s life, so her younger brothers and sisters could eat well and dress warmly. If she could save some money and marry Aniu, that would be perfect.
But she never imagined ending up in such a household.
Every few days someone was brought in, and every few days someone was carried out, never to return. Among these people were those like her, taken on as temporary help, and servants bound by an Indenture Contract.
It wasn’t supposed to be her turn to get beaten today. The chosen one was a girl bought by a young master from outside, who had been extremely favored and had saved a good amount of silver. She offered two hundred taels for Cuicui to take her place and endure the beating.
Two hundred taels, an amount she could never earn in her lifetime. If she could just get through this beating, once the young master’s anger subsided, her task would be complete.
Everything should have been fine.
But Aniu had to come running, and with a heartfelt cry nonetheless.
Sun Yian had cooled down slightly, but when he heard the noise, he looked at the other people in the room.
He violently smashed the teapot, “Disturbing my peace, beat him as well!”
Almost instantly, people surrounded Aniu.
Aniu, concerned for Cuicui, struggled to get to her. He was strong, but Sun Yian’s men were numerous, and after being humiliated at the docks that day, they were all arrogant and used to having their way. As they were still fuming, several of them ganged up on Aniu, restraining him and attacking him with punches and kicks without any regard.
Fighting against odds, Aniu quickly fell into a pool of blood.
Cuicui, too, was left lying on the ground. She desperately crawled toward Aniu, pleading, “Please, please stop beating him, stop it!”
She was covered in blood; the ground was smeared with her blood where she crawled. She tried to stand several times, only to be kicked down again, but at least she could still get up. The way they were punching and kicking Aniu was utterly different, it was life-threatening violence.
“Brother Aniu!” Cuicui called out, as she struggled to her feet, pushing people aside and throwing herself on Aniu.
“Cuicui!” Aniu was beaten within an inch of his life.
His face was bruised, his nose, mouth, and ears all bleeding.
“Brother Aniu!” Cuicui softly called, blood trickling down the corner of her mouth onto Aniu’s face, “Why did you come, why did you have to come!”
She had managed to send him away, so why did he come back.
If only he had been a little later, after she left this courtyard, they could take the silver home to heal. Once healed, with the money, they could have gotten married, started a small business.
Why did he have to come.
Aniu opened his mouth, wanting to say something.
But he couldn’t speak, in so much pain he was. He had a feeling that he wouldn’t survive the night.
He hadn’t yet married his beloved Cuicui, hadn’t made her happy.
“Cuicui…”
Aniu never got to say the rest, as he breathed his last.
“Brother Aniu?” Cuicui called out in shock, unable to believe as she cried again, “Brother Aniu?”
There was no response.
Sun Yian stood at the doorway and said coldly, “Get rid of these two, dump them at Mass Grave Mound!”
“Yes!”
