Raven fed Alara her fourth zombie nucleus core with detached calmness, watching as Alara’s pale body absorbed the energy. Alara’s skin, though still pale and corpse-like, held a faint flush of restored vitality, her limbs moved a little less stiff than before, her walking pace more stable. Raven kept one eye on her surroundings as she looked at Momma Jean and asked her.
“Tell me about the other groups causing trouble around here,” Raven asked, voice flat.
Momma Jean hesitated, then nodded slowly, her greasy hair falling forward as she licked her lips nervously. “There’s one group the Red Blood Raiders. They came out of nowhere. The moment the cops pulled out, they slithered out into the open sun like cockroaches. They ran a huge human trafficking operation before the world went to shit. Now that this has happened, they have been snatching up women nonstop. A few of the girls I took in before were grabbed in broad daylight by them. The only reason they backed off is probably my appearance. Looking deranged in the apocalypse helps a lot."
Raven’s eyes narrowed. She already had her suspicions confirmed. This wasn’t just some casual scavenging trip for her she was here with a plan in mind. Alara is just a bonus, but the real reason she is to catch her next target of revenge the Red Blood Raiders.
She thought of Adam Carter—the bastard leading the Red Blood Raiders—and her jaw tensed. The memory of being sold out by her family in her past life, traded to monsters like them, still lingered like a bad taste in her mouth.
And now she their scent.
She wondered idly how her former family was doing. William, her father, stripped of his supplies and guns. Brandon, her asshole brother. And little Jason, her nephew, the little eight year old who's as fat as hell. He probably is not waddling around anymore like a penguin. Not unless zombies had a taste for pork.
Momma Jean’s voice broke into her thoughts again. “They’ve got a small outpost here in the mall. We were going to move, but... we’re low on food and ammo. It’s just a matter of time before they find us.” She said with fear in her voice.
Raven gave a cold smile, saying, “Then it’s a good thing I’m here.”
Momma Jean blinked. “You’re... going to help us?”
Raven didn’t answer directly. She turned back to Alara and put the fifth zombie core into her mouth. The red-eyed girl accepted it without hesitation, her body already beginning to overflow with more energy. This is the slow road to her becoming a Level One Zombie.
Without looking back, Raven spoke. “Go inside the store. Don’t come out. No matter what you hear.”
Momma Jean opened her mouth to protest, but something in Raven’s tone stopped her. She nodded once and turned back toward the store.
One of the girls beside her whispered, “Was that a zombie with her just now?”
Momma Jean froze, then hissed back sharply, “Shut the hell up! Do you want to die? Don’t ask strange questions like that. Especially not people like her. That’s how you end up as a stain on the wall.”
The group fell into tense silence as Raven disappeared deeper into the mall, Alara trailing behind her like a silent cat.
