“Captain, come and have your meal!”
Just as Fisher was lost in thought, Pahetz called out again in the direction of the dining room entrance. Fisher turned his head and saw that Alagina wasn’t wearing the pure white dress from before, but had changed back into her usual black captain attire as the Iceberg Queen.
She nodded and sat down next to Fisher, who then handed her the letter from Helena,
“This is a letter from Helena to you.”
Alagina glanced emotionlessly at the letter she had received and was about to tear it up without any hesitation. But when her fingers had already creased the paper with several folds from her grip, she suddenly relaxed, opened the envelope, and began to read the contents.
Fisher began to enjoy his breakfast, casually beckoning Emhardt from Old Jack’s shoulder, who floated over to Fisher’s shoulder reluctantly. He remained silent, looking at the bad man who had abandoned him with dead-fish eyes.
Before long, Alagina had finished reading the letter Helena wrote to her. This time, without hesitation, she tore the paper to shreds, much to Pahetz’s amusement sitting across from her,
“That fellow never has any good words to say.”
“By the way, Mr. Fisher, we’re leaving Patulshen Island today. Should I have Ossie call down Miss Isabella, or…”
When Pahetz said the name “Isabella”, he lowered his voice a bit. After all, this was the name of the Princess of Nali, with a sizable bounty offered by the Golden Palace, practically a mountain of gold to outsiders…
Fisher shook his head and took a sip of his coffee,
“When you leave, I’ll go to the port to see you off. It’s also a chance to see her and Karma and the others.”
“Hah, without you, those three brats will probably turn the world upside down. I’m starting to wonder if it was a good idea to bring them out of Nali.”
Pahetz noticed Old Jack’s sour face, clearly irritated by the three Mouse Human Species girls who had recently emerged from the basement. He touched his chin and Old Jack’s sturdy shoulder, and said with a laugh,
“Don’t worry, Mr. Jack, I have a reputation for being strict in the army. Teaching a few kids is no big deal.”
Breakfast didn’t take long, and soon it was only Pahetz and Old Jack remaining in the hotel waiting for Alagina and Fisher. The other crew members had gone to the harbor to prepare for departure, communicating with the local gangs as was customary. Fisher wasn’t quite clear on the specifics.
By the time Fisher got there, they had almost finished handling everything. The Iceberg Queen’s cargo hold on the side was slowly closing, and upon Pahetz’s command, several thick iron chains were flung down. Using those chains, people from below could reach the deck, just as Fisher had first met Alagina.
The ships from the Northern Realm were always massive. Standing at the side of the ship, you’d be awed by the steel giant that towered like a mountain. Each cannon from Schwali gleamed clean, and the huge ice-breaking spear at the front shone coldly, every part showcasing the legendary pirate ship’s power.
The local gangs of Patulshen Island and other newcomers stayed far away, not daring to come close, but Fisher felt a familiarity with the ship before him, its usual chilling aura lessened.
The reason was simple, solely because of the Iceberg Queen by his side.
Pahetz and Old Jack had already grabbed the iron chains to board. Fisher watched as they quickly ascended back to the deck, while Alagina stood by his side without leaving, just quietly standing there.
Fisher turned to look at Alagina, taller than himself, and realized she wasn’t looking at the ship in front of her. She had been watching him the whole time.
The sea breeze carried the sunshine along, blowing a bit of her ponytailed white hair, exposing Fisher’s once tasted pink earlobe,
“Fisher… I’m thinking now, if I were to set a goal, what it would be…”
Alagina extended her hand and released the shredded pieces of the letter she had crumpled but hadn’t disposed of. The paper particles, shattered into star-like fragments, scattered and fell into the sea,
“I know… both Fisher and I, because of a vague goal, we’re constantly rushing about, tirelessly. Only after these few days with Fisher did I suddenly understand why Helena said I lacked a goal. Maybe… deep in my heart, I’ve been waiting for the day my steps can stop.”
“When everything is over, when future stories become dull and all too similar, that might be the time I truly yearn for… I might return to the Female Country, find a not-so-wealthy village or city, live with those I’ve known before, and those I may come to know. Most importantly, I would be with someone I love, to make a family together. I would provide, care for him, make him happy, and he would be responsible for raising and teaching our offspring…”
Alagina’s expression was calm, but in her deep blue eyes was always the reflection of Fisher.
