Chapter 52: Chapter 52: Going Too Far
"Come on, Tristan, what on earth did Chase Sinclair do to piss you off? Isn’t it enough if I go beat him up for you? Do you have to be so cruel to me, too?" Cassian Jennings clearly hadn’t noticed that something was off with Tristan Grayson. He was still agonizing over Tristan’s earlier remark.
’Chase Sinclair? Beat him up?’
Mika Summers looked at Tristan Grayson in shock when she heard Cassian Jennings’s words.
To her, Chase Sinclair had just been a stranger. There was no need to pay him any special attention.
But when she heard Tristan Grayson was going to send someone to beat up Chase Sinclair, a spark of fear ignited in her, and she felt an even deeper sense of guilt toward this man she didn’t even know.
’It was truly his misfortune to get mixed up with her.’
If an innocent person got beaten up because of her, she would never be able to live with herself.
Tristan Grayson’s expression instantly darkened.
On pure reflex, he started to explain. But when his eyes met hers, he gave a self-mocking smile and swallowed the words he was about to say.
’Why should I explain myself to her? There’s nothing to explain. Besides, I don’t think I’ve done anything wrong.’
’She is my wife—Tristan Grayson’s wife, even if only in name. She was being harassed by another man. It’s perfectly normal for me to teach that man a lesson.’
Her eyes red-rimmed, Mika Summers walked toward Tristan Grayson. With every step, a sharp pain lanced through her heart.
’Why did I fall for a man like this? Why did I fall in love with a man like this?’
’I hate him so much. So, so much. I hate Tristan Grayson, but I hate myself even more.’
’I hate myself for falling hopelessly in love with him, time and time again.’
’Just a few days ago, I had finally, finally managed to get away from him.’
’I didn’t have to step back into this cage. Why did I have to be so weak? Why did I agree to help him one last time?’
Looking at the woman before him, Tristan Grayson felt a sense of panic for the first time in his life.
’Why is this woman looking at me like that?’
’Is it because she heard Cassian Jennings say he was going to beat up that Chase Sinclair guy? Is her heart aching for him?’
Mika Summers stared intently at Tristan Grayson, demanding in a cold voice, "Tristan Grayson, do you really hate me this much?"
Tristan’s face was grim. ’Hate her? I’m supposed to hate her, but...’ He found he couldn’t bring himself to say it. He opened his mouth several times, but the words wouldn’t come out.
Cassian Jennings, who was standing to the side, also sensed that something was wrong.
He glanced from Tristan’s face, which was cold enough to freeze hell over, to the heartbroken woman before him. A gossipy look crossed his face as he stroked his chin, sizing the two of them up.
’So it’s true,’ she thought. ’He really does hate me. He hates me so much he won’t even speak to me.’
Swallowing back her tears, she said in a trembling voice, "If you hate me, you can do whatever you want to me. Why do you have to drag other people into this?"
"So, you’re defending him?" Tristan Grayson let out a cold laugh as he listened to her.
’I knew it.’
"Yes. This is between us, so why did you have to drag someone else into it? Tristan Grayson, I told you I was going to leave! Why are you still treating me like this?"
By the end, Mika Summers was so agitated that she pointed at Tristan Grayson and yelled, "Tristan Grayson, you’ve gone too far!"
Tristan Grayson grabbed her hand, his gaze turning vicious as he glared at her. He enunciated each word, "Don’t forget, you are my wife! Tristan Grayson’s wife!"
’She had said so much, but all he’d heard was that one word: leave. So she wants to leave? To leave him so she can be with that other man?’
