Echoterra: Rise of the Verdant King Chapter 15

[System Notification: Evolutionary Fragment Absorbed – Gorehowl Vurm (Lesser Predator Variant)]

The change began with a tremor.

The tremors began from the roots of my body, like a hum crawling through every strand of my being.

I didn't even realize I was swaying until I saw the thorns on my body elongate with a twitch. Not just grow. Rather, they twisted and hardened; a ripple with ridges that hadn't been there before.

Something fundamental was changing again. I was becoming even more monstrous.

Something deep was changing.

Almost like... a new instinct.

[New Trait Gained: Predator's Reflex!]

>You now possess an instinctive motion response matrix against sudden threats. Speed increased by 20% when reacting to ambushes or rapid movement near you.

[Secondary Trait Gained: Subdermal Sensory Web (Minor)]

>Allows environmental vibration detection through soil and air interface. Blindspots reduced.

[Biomass Reinforcement Complete]

>Thorn structure density increased.

>Photosynthetic conversion efficiency increased by 12%.

>Chlorophyll saturation optimal.

I wasn't just stronger.

I was faster, sharper, even more aware.

'A ruthless crucible'. I thought darkly.

Like expected, the evolutionary fragments were the key to growing, evolving, adapting. The Vurm hadn't been just a threat; it was a blueprint. And now, I had rewritten it into myself, absorbed its evolutionary fragments.

I pressed my roots against the earth. Beneath my skin, if I could even call it skin anymore, I could feel faint vibrations. The shift of wind between the bristles of a leaf. A small insect darting through underbrush.

And I was learning how to read it with greater proficiency.

[Territory Expansion: 12.1 sq.m achieved!]

>New sector claimed: 2.8 sq.m of southern canopy ridge.

>Clearing toxins... Establishing photosynthesis relay...

Seeing this notification, my mind was filled with dark glee.

Growth..., it was intoxicating.

Now that I had a goal that I was pursuing, I put my all towards it, the 100 square meters target. It didn't matter the feathers that I would be ruffling and stepping on, it didn't matter the predators I would meet, the obstacles.

I'll overcome them all.

My roots deepened, my vines unfolding wider like wings.

As for the new instincts that I gained? Something pulsed in my chest, not a beat, but a presence. A will. The beginnings of something greater than mere instinct, a predator's reflex.

As my roots flexed across my expanded territory, I thought. 'I wonder how long it'll take me to expand my territory to 100 square meters'.

Time became a blur in the bloodstained soil of Echoterra.

Growth was never gentle; it was carved in pain, stitched in survival, and watered in wrath. With every creeping inch of new root and thorn I bled into this cursed world, my territory grew with it.

[System Notification!]

>Territorial Domain expanded.

[Current Size: 13.5 square meters.]

My expansion south, as successful as it was, every gain had come at a cost.

I met resistance at every few meters, obstacles that tested my limits.

Nothing quite as deadly as the Gorehowl Vurm yet, but more than enough to keep me on edge, always striving for strength and evolution.

There were the Lash Vines, sentient tendrils that lashed out like whips, trying to stake dominance over sunlight. I learned to sever them mid-surge, strangling them with my own roots before their pollen could infect me with madness.

And then there were the Mirehowlers, beastly amphibians with skull-like heads and an echo that paralyzed anything with a nervous system.

I didn't have nerves, but their cry still shook something instinctual inside me.

I buried their corpses beneath my roots, using their nutrients to grow deeper, stronger.

[System Notification!]

>You have absorbed an Evolutionary Fragment: [Paralytic Resistance 1].

Each battle, each kill, they all left an imprint.

I started cataloging death.

Plant. Beast. Fungus. Even mineral-based anomalies. Each was either prey or predator; there was no middle ground, not in Echoterra.

And I was learning. Fast.

How to hunt even better, how to become a deadlier monster plant in this hostile world. And most importantly, how to better and faster grow my territory.

After every battle, I came out stronger, more ruthless, and with more experience. And the more I learned, the faster I grew my territory.

[System Notification!]

[Territorial Domain expanded!]

[Current Size: 24.7 square meters.]

The days, if you could call them that bled together.

A black sun hovered above Echoterra like a malignant eye. I didn't sleep, I didn't rest. I just existed.

Then came the Spinal Burrowers, another group of predators that left an imprint on my memory; massive insectoids that lived beneath the soil and surfaced only to ambush. Like lesser versions of the Gorehowl Vurm.

But unlike the Gorehowl Vurm, they were a horde!

During the first encounter, they shattered three of my thorns before I figured them out. Using Root Web and my other senses to detect subterranean vibrations, I baited them, then impaled them mid-leap with a concentrated growth spike.

That battle left me shaken. My WRATH flared.

I fed their corpses to the earth.

[System Notification!]

[Territorial Domain expanded!]

[Current Size: 37.2 square meters.]

>Evolutionary Fragment acquired: [Chitin Weave: Thorn Density +12%]

Then, just before breaching 40 square meters, I felt it. Something familiar.

Not a beast. Not a plant.

A seed. A human seed?

It pulsed in the distance, its aura faint, flickering. It was drowning. Fading.

My thoughts were interrupted by a new system notification.

[System Notification!]

[Another Seed has been claimed under your Territory!]

[Status: Dormant Trial Candidate.]

[You are now a Warden.]

[You are no longer alone.]

[You have integrated the territory of a Dormant Trial Candidate!]

[Territorial Domain expanded!]

[Current Size: 44 square meters.]
