Eclipse Online: The Final Descent Chapter 17

The Gate of Shadows groaned as it opened, revealing a swirling expanse of shifting light and darkness.

It was not a doorway in the traditional sense—there was no clear path, no bridge, no road. Instead, an abyss stretched before Kaito, pulsing with an eerie rhythm, like the slow, deliberate beating of a massive heart.

A cold wind swept past him, carrying whispers in a language he couldn't understand. The voices of the forgotten. The voices of those who had come before.

Kaito inhaled deeply. His entire journey had led to this moment. There was no hesitation left in him. He took a step forward—and the world collapsed around him.

The moment Kaito crossed the threshold, he felt as though he had been ripped from existence.

There was no sense of falling, no gravity pulling him down. It was as if the universe had swallowed him whole, reducing him to a mere fragment of consciousness drifting through an endless void.

Then, suddenly—impact.

Kaito hit the ground hard, the shock rattling through his bones. He coughed, struggling to push himself up. His fingers dug into cold, cracked stone, the surface beneath him rough and ancient.

His vision swam, and as it cleared, he took in his surroundings.

He was standing on a massive, circular platform of black obsidian, suspended over a seemingly endless abyss. Strange crimson symbols pulsed along the stone, glowing like embers. Jagged formations of rock and crystal jutted from below, emanating a faint, malevolent light.

And at the center of it all—a heart.

Not a metaphorical one. A real, beating heart, massive and suspended in the air above an altar of black stone.

But this was no human organ. It was not made of flesh, nor was it biological in any way. Instead, its surface was veined with cracks of molten energy, its core pulsing with a terrifying, ancient power. With every slow, deliberate thump, the air around Kaito shuddered, as if the very fabric of reality bent to its rhythm.

Kaito could barely breathe. He had fought gods, demons, and monsters—but this presence was something else entirely. It wasn't just powerful. It was... absolute.

"You stand before me... a mortal who seeks the power of eternity."

The voice was neither male nor female. It was deep, reverberating, as though spoken from the very bones of the universe itself.

Kaito swallowed, gripping the Shard of Eternity at his side.

"I've come to claim my right," he said, his voice steady despite the pressure suffocating him. "I've fought. I've bled. I've sacrificed. And now, I stand here."

The Heart throbbed, and the ground beneath Kaito shook.

"Power is not given. It is taken."

The air rippled, and from the shadows around the platform, figures began to rise.

At first, they were mere outlines—distorted, flickering shapes. Then, as the crimson symbols along the ground flared brighter, the figures solidified.

Clad in blackened armor, their faces obscured by featureless, obsidian masks. Their weapons gleamed with an unnatural, ethereal glow, and their bodies radiated an aura of absolute silence.

"If you wish to claim the Heart, you must prove yourself worthy."

The warriors moved as one, stepping forward with eerie precision.

The first warrior lunged, a curved blade aimed at Kaito's throat. He barely managed to dodge, the edge whistling past his ear.

Before he could counter, another came from the side.

Kaito pivoted, raising the Shard of Eternity just in time to clash against an incoming strike. The impact sent shockwaves through his arms.

These enemies were unlike anything he had faced before. Their strikes were not wild, not chaotic. They were perfectly executed, each movement precise, each attack calculated to kill.

Another warrior charged, spear raised.

Kaito twisted, using the force of the previous clash to spin and drive his sword into the warrior's chest. But instead of piercing flesh, the blade met resistance, as if striking solid iron. The force of his own attack sent him stumbling back.

"They are not human," Kaito realized. "They are something else."

The warriors pressed forward. Relentless. Unstoppable.

Kaito gritted his teeth, forcing himself into motion.

He dodged low beneath a horizontal slash, countered with a sharp upward strike, then pivoted to deflect another blow from behind. He was faster, more skilled—but it wasn't enough.

The warriors never slowed.

They never hesitated.

One of them landed a strike—a shallow cut along Kaito's ribs. Another nearly broke through his guard, forcing him to backpedal toward the center of the platform.

"Damn it," Kaito hissed, breathing hard. "If this keeps up, I—"

Then—the Shard pulsed.

A sudden surge of black energy exploded outward, hurling the warriors back. The ground beneath them cracked, the obsidian shattering beneath the force.

For a brief moment, there was silence.

Then the Heart spoke again, its voice... softer.

The warriors froze, their weapons lowering.

Kaito, chest heaving, glanced around in confusion.

The air shifted, and from the shadows near the Heart, something emerged.

He was tall, clad in robes woven from shadow and light, his face obscured by an intricate silver mask. But his eyes—his eyes—glowed with a terrifying ancient intensity.

"You are not here to steal power," the figure said, his voice calm yet overwhelming. "You are here to awaken what already lies within you."

Kaito's breath caught.

"What... do you mean?"

The figure stepped closer, raising a hand.

"You have already begun to change, Kaito Ren."

A wave of energy crashed over Kaito, and suddenly—memories surged through him. His battles. His pain. His triumphs. But deeper than that, something else—something buried.

A truth he had never dared to see.

"You were never meant to be just a warrior," the figure said. "You were meant to become something more."

The warriors surrounding Kaito knelt, lowering their heads.

The masked figure's gaze did not waver.

"You have been chosen."

Kaito's heart pounded. He had come here expecting to fight, to take power.

The power had been waiting for him all along.
