Eclipse Online: The Final Descent Chapter 2

Kaito's body screamed as it registered the searing heat of blood spilling from his wounds.

His chest was a mass of gashes, the thick scent of iron mingling with the cold, musty air of Noctis Hollow. His pulse thudded painfully in his ears.

Each breath he took felt like he was dragging a blade across his lungs. But worse than the pain—far worse—was the feeling of something slipping away.

Something that was never supposed to leave him.

A deep, gnawing sensation churned in his stomach, and his mind raced, trying to comprehend what had happened.

This should have been impossible. Eclipse Online was a game built on the premise of permadeath. Once you died, your character's data was erased. There was no second chance, no miracle revival. Yet here he stood, his body battered and broken, but alive.

Or at least, something that resembled life.

Kaito's gaze dropped to the glowing stat that hovered at the corner of his vision.

It had only been a few seconds since the battle began, but each time he glanced at that number, it seemed to drop lower.

His soul—his very essence—was eroding with each passing moment, yet his body remained intact. His hands trembled as he gripped his sword, the weight of it feeling foreign in his palm.

The Dire Fangwolves were no ordinary creatures. Their massive forms were wreathed in shadows, their claws long and deadly, their teeth gleaming with a hunger that didn't seem entirely natural.

The last time he had encountered them, he had been able to dodge their attacks with ease, his reflexes sharp, his focus unwavering. But now, he felt sluggish, like his body was no longer in perfect sync with his mind.

Before he could dwell on it, the first wolf charged at him again.

Its jaws snapped shut with a sickening crack, aiming directly for his throat.

Kaito barely had time to react before it was on him, its claws reaching for his face. He shifted to the side, his body moving in a way that felt too slow. He barely avoided the wolf's lethal swipe, but a claw scraped across his shoulder, tearing through his armor and into his flesh.

He stumbled, wincing at the pain, but the wolf didn't relent.

The creature leaped at him again, its massive form moving faster than Kaito could follow. His sword lifted instinctively, but it felt heavier than usual, as if his very will to fight was being siphoned away.

His muscles strained to react, but his movements were delayed, disjointed. He barely raised his blade in time to deflect the wolf's next attack, and the sheer force of the blow sent him crashing into the ground.

Kaito groaned as the earth slammed against his back. His breath hitched in pain, and his vision swam. His head was spinning.

The sharp bite of the wolf's claws still rang in his memory. But there was something more pressing than the physical pain—the deep, unsettling knowledge that he was no longer the same.

What is happening to me?

His mind was racing, his thoughts fragmented. He should be dead. He should have vanished, erased from the game world as was the rule. But instead, his soul—his very essence—was being torn apart. It wasn't just his body that was damaged.

It was something far deeper.

Another drop. His chest tightened as he watched the number change. He couldn't let it fall any further.

The wolves circled him, their eyes glowing in the darkness. They were waiting.

Kaito's fingers twitched around his sword, his grip tightening as he stood up shakily. He had to think. He had to do something.

But what? What could he do when his very existence was being chipped away?

Then, through the haze of his thoughts, a voice—cold, emotionless—whispered inside his mind.

"Do you wish to survive?"

The question seemed to hang in the air, weightless and ominous. Kaito froze. His heart hammered in his chest, and his breath caught in his throat.

Who was that? Who was speaking to him?

He had heard voices before in the game—NPCs, other players—but this was different. This wasn't a voice that came from the world around him. It came from within.

He had no choice. The wolves were closing in, and the world around him seemed to shift with a new, oppressive weight.

"Yes," he whispered, the word escaping his lips like a breath of air, barely audible.

The moment he spoke, something within him shifted.

A surge of cold energy flooded his veins, spreading like ice through his body. He gasped, his teeth chattering from the sudden chill. He felt his flesh freeze, but it wasn't uncomfortable. It was as though he were being reformed, reshaped by an otherworldly power.

A strange clarity flooded his mind. His body, though still battered and broken, felt different. It was as though he had become something other—something that no longer obeyed the laws of this world.

A new message appeared in front of him:

[A Fragment of Your Soul Has Been Offered.]

Kaito didn't have time to think. His body responded instinctively.

"Yes!" he shouted, though the words felt like they had come from somewhere else. The moment the word left his mouth, a burst of power surged through him.

He could feel it—his soul had sacrificed something, and in return, he had been granted an unnatural ability.

His eyes flickered with sudden understanding. He had no idea what he had just done, but the power coursing through him felt real. And he needed it.

The second wolf lunged at him, but Kaito was ready.

In a single instant, his body vanished.

The world slowed, and his vision shifted. The wolf's claws passed through empty air where Kaito had been standing just a moment ago. His body had shifted into a blur—a shadow of himself—moving so fast that the beast couldn't even track his movements.

He reappeared behind the wolf, a few feet away. His blade was already in motion.

His sword cut through the air with precision, its edge glowing with a faint, otherworldly light. In a swift, clean arc, he struck the wolf's skull.

The wolf howled in agony, its massive body collapsing in a heap at Kaito's feet. The other wolf, momentarily stunned, backed away.

[Dire Fangwolf has been slain.]

Kaito stood over the fallen beast, his breath coming in shallow gasps. He had done it. He had survived. But at what cost?

His gaze shifted to the new stat that had appeared in his HUD.

Each use of that strange power, that Phantom Step, came at a cost. The more he relied on it, the further his soul was eroded.

Would he lose himself entirely? Would he become something less than human?

The thought gnawed at the back of his mind, but he couldn't afford to dwell on it. The other wolf was still alive, and the shadows were closing in.

His body wasn't his own anymore. His very essence was slipping away.

But for now, Kaito Ren had a single goal: survive.
