"This..." Caleb glanced at his boss’s expression, pondered for a moment, and said, "That’s what the person reporting said. But maybe something was missed or misheard; should I go and confirm it more clearly?"
"No need." Kyle said with a stern face.
Once again, Caleb felt that his boss was angry.
Two days later, Mabel found that the branded clothes, shoes, and bags in her room had indeed increased again. It must be that the servants had returned what they previously stole.
But then, several servants were suddenly dismissed from the Kinston residence, including the manager and the maid who stole Mabel’s longevity lock.
The only one who could order such dismissals was Kyle. Mabel was a bit surprised; she thought Kyle wouldn’t even bother with such trivial matters.
In the Corporation’s pantry, Mabel and Lilith were chatting while making coffee. Lilith was focused on the upcoming launch ceremony a month later.
Now, the actors, director, and staff for the film had all been decided, but the script was still delayed, naturally causing embarrassment.
"You can’t imagine how bad the chief editor’s mood has been these days," Lilith said. "I heard from Manager Fang that if Lyra Grant doesn’t submit a suitable script by next week, then other writers will take over. We can’t let this delay the whole film’s progress. Mabel, this is an opportunity for us too! Maybe our names as small-time writers can even appear in the film’s credits."
"Yes, if our names could appear in the credits, that would be pretty nice," Mabel said with some wistfulness. But for her, whether her name appeared or not was of no concern. To her, this novel felt like a farewell to a former unrequited love. Some of the script drafts she wrote in her spare time felt like a reflection on the past from the present.
Some times, once passed, never return, and some feelings are the same.
Just then, Lyra Grant walked into the pantry, frowned, and glared at Mabel as if Mabel had somehow embarrassed her.
Mabel touched her nose in confusion, not knowing what was up with Lyra this time.
Lyra, while brewing her tea, was thinking about what the chief editor had just said to her in the office. This time, the chief editor was full of praise, saying that the script she submitted was great, much better than her previous work, and that portraying the film this way would resonate more with the audience.
But this praise didn’t make her happy at all, because the script she submitted was copied from Mabel’s computer. She had intentionally planted a virus to destroy Mabel’s script on her computer. She couldn’t explain why she did it at the time, or maybe she had a premonition that the events of the past were about to replay.
These days, at home, she read Mabel’s script; it had many new elements beyond the novel but still felt very much in line with it. Pressured by the chief editor, she gritted her teeth, made some minor changes to Mabel’s script, and submitted it, only to receive such high praise.
