His gaze flickered, yet he didn’t evade her hand.
She touched him, and the temperature had already dropped. It seemed his fever had subsided. "In a bit, why don’t you use the thermometer to check your temperature again, just to make sure," she said, lowering her hand. "I didn’t mean to... end up in your bed. I was watching animation with you last night and somehow just... fell asleep..."
The more she explained, the more embarrassed she felt. Watching "Pleasant Goat and Big Big Wolf" with Kyle Kinston was truly a unique experience.
He suddenly narrowed his eyes, "You watched animation with me?"
"Yeah, ’Pleasant Goat and Big Big Wolf.’ And you picked it yourself," she added at the end.
A hint of danger suddenly appeared in his expression, "What else did I do or say last night?"
Mabel Quinn immediately felt a surge of pressure; she suddenly missed the Kyle from last night who was talking gibberish. At least he seemed so innocent then; he even said thank you softly when she gave him milk and cereal!
"You... uh, called me sister, asked me to play with you, and... we watched animation and drank milk and cereal..." she muttered.
"That’s all?" he leaned in, lowering his head a bit closer to her.
She couldn’t help but swallow as her throat rapidly secreted saliva, "And said... you didn’t want me to hit you... mentioned the meaning of your name..."
The light in his eyes became even deeper, "What does my name mean?"
"Alone for life..." she murmured.
She had never thought his name would bear such a meaning. What kind of parents would wish for their child to be alone for life?
Kyle Kinston squinted a bit, "Don’t mention last night to anyone."
She nodded repeatedly, thinking that even if she did, others would probably think she was imagining things.
"And don’t recklessly run into another person’s dagger in the future. I have enough ability to protect myself." He continued, recalling last night’s scene. She could have been injured or even killed, and his heart involuntarily tightened.
Was it because she was Mabel, or was it because she herself... was increasingly becoming important to him? It seemed to exceed the concern for Mabel.
"I was just too worried about you at the time," she said.
He chuckled softly, "Worried about me?"
She nodded honestly, "Yeah."
He smiled, "Okay, whether it’s true or false, it makes me happy to hear it." It seemed like the heaviness in his chest and the restless feeling dissipated with her words, and even the pain in his shoulder seemed to lessen.
Mabel Quinn pursed her lips seriously, "I’m telling the truth, Kyle Kinston, thank you for saving... my life!" Indeed, he essentially saved her life yesterday.
"So how do you plan to repay me for this life?" he asked back.
