"Yeah, I do." Mabel Quinn nodded. "Do you come here often?"
"Not really often, just occasionally." Daniel Harris replied.
"You’ve got a good spot here. People outside can’t see you, but you can see the center of the square from here." Mabel noted.
"That’s why I spot; sitting here, I can see the music fountain in the center of the square." Daniel said, "I once told someone very important to me that if one day she misses me and looks for me, we would meet here at the music fountain in the center of the city square."
Mabel was slightly taken aback, then smiled and said, "You’re lucky. I heard a few times the government planned to remove this music fountain and replace it with something else, but somehow, in the end, they postponed it, and the music fountain has been preserved."
Daniel smiled lightly without saying anything. Of course, he knew about this; it was his intervention that saved the fountain.
"Did that important person come to find you?" Mabel asked curiously.
"No, but I found her." Daniel said, reminiscing about the past, "She and I came here and watched the fountain."
"That’s wonderful." Mabel said sincerely.
"Yes, it is." But why did he always feel as if something was still missing? There was always a feeling inside him, as if telling him he hadn’t truly gotten what he wanted.
He continued to preserve this fountain, even though that important person now stayed by his side, yet he didn’t want it to disappear. He would occasionally come here to sit and watch it.
Suddenly, Mabel’s phone rang. It was a call from Katie, but her voice sounded heavy on the phone, "Mabel, the art teacher, Mr. Wang, from high school has passed away. Tomorrow is his funeral, and I plan to go. Are you going?"
Mr. Wang was the art teacher in high school, a quiet middle-aged man. Back when her novel was plagiarized, and she went to the homeroom teacher, he scolded her, but Mr. Wang was also in the office and said a few words on her behalf.
Unfortunately, no one helped her get to the bottom of it. But Mr. Wang’s kindness, she thought she would remember it for a lifetime.
She naturally had to attend Mr. Wang’s funeral.
Mabel specifically took a day off from the Corporation, then dressed in a black outfit and went to the funeral parlor the next day.
Katie was already there. As soon as she saw Mabel, she approached and said, "Soren and Lyra Grant are also here today, but they seem a little strange. It doesn’t look like they’ve said much since they arrived."
Mabel followed Katie to the mourning hall rented by Mr. Wang’s family and saw quite a few classmates from high school, along with several teachers from those days.
Four years had passed, and many people had changed a bit from back then.
The homeroom teacher who used to scold her harshly was now gathered around Lyra Grant, speaking enthusiastically, while several other high school classmates surrounded Lyra, making her seem like the center of attention.
"Look, at today’s funeral, who knows how many classmates want to get closer to Lyra Grant. They say they’re here for the funeral, but some seem more focused on networking." Katie said softly.
