Daniel Harris took the can of cookies and took out one, placing it in his palm and motioning to Big Yellow.
So, Mabel Quinn watched as the big yellow dog enthusiastically ran towards Daniel Harris, affectionately licking Daniel’s fingers with its tongue before its tongue wrapped around the dog biscuit, its tail wagging happily.
Daniel Harris fed the big yellow dog several cookies, and from the dog’s appearance, it seemed to enjoy the dog biscuits. However, once it finished eating, it looked at Mabel Quinn with its dog eyes as if expecting more, leaving Mabel at a loss for words.
Daniel Harris faintly smiled and said, "Big Yellow isn’t too friendly with strangers."
More than just unfriendly, it practically treats "strangers" like enemies! Of course, during the days at Han Garden, when Big Yellow appeared, the only other person around was Mabel Quinn, so she wasn’t sure how the big yellow dog behaved towards other strangers.
"It seems very loyal to you." She couldn’t help but remark to Daniel Harris. She had already learned that Big Yellow’s one eye was blinded by a group of kids, and it was him who happened to save it, keeping it by his side since then.
"Dogs are actually quite simple. Whoever treats them well, they understand and will repay with their whole life. But humans are complex; even knowing someone treats you well, they may not necessarily repay it with their whole life," Daniel Harris said. As he spoke these words, a mist seemed to cover his eyes, obscuring the emotions within them.
Mabel Quinn was a bit taken aback, his words sounding as if someone was good to him, yet he felt unable to repay them with his life.
She thought for a moment and said, "Repaying someone doesn’t necessarily have to be with your whole life. If you feel someone is good to you, then treat them well in return, that’s enough."
"But if her kindness to you gave you a life, gave you all the hope in the world, then?" he countered, "In that case, if she wants your whole life, can you not give it?"
Mabel Quinn was stunned, "A person’s life shouldn’t just be used as repayment. Besides, if someone sincerely treats another well, they wouldn’t want any repayment."
Daniel Harris smiled faintly, but within that smile, there seemed to be a hint of indifference, "Have you ever done something good for someone without hoping for their repayment?"
Looking at the person in front of her, those eyes, Mabel Quinn once again thought of the older brother from the small mountain village. If she wanted any repayment... it would be hoping that one day that person’s eyes could see.
Such beautiful eyes, person’s in front of her, could see everything in the world.
Mabel Quinn raised the corners of her lips, smiling gently, "True, I might have been exaggerating. Different people, different expectations for repayment. Just like bringing cookies for Big Yellow, it’s not without the hope of changing Big Yellow’s attitude towards me."
Her voice flowed into his heart like a gentle stream.
Even Daniel Harris himself couldn’t quite understand why he said these things to her unconsciously, just as he didn’t know why he repeatedly invited her into Han Garden.
It’s as if seeing her, having her sit in front of him , gave him a sense of relaxation he hadn’t felt in a long time.
