"Why did you do such a thing? Mabel has been with us in the same dormitory for four years; I thought we were all friends. What kind of deep hatred do you have against her that you had to do this? Evelyn slowly lifted her head and stared at Alice Conley, "Don’t say those pretty words as if you’re so righteous for Mabel Quinn. Aren’t you jealous? What’s so great about her? She’s from a single-parent family, yet she can be Kyle Kinston’s girlfriend. I am not less beautiful than her; my family background is better. Why is it that her boyfriend is better than mine, and everything she will have in the future will be better than what I have?"
Alice Conley was full of disappointment, "I never thought you would think . If you’re going to compare beauty and family background, how many people can you surpass? Just those prominent young ladies in J City have better looks and better family backgrounds than you. If we decided who can be whose girlfriend based on these comparisons, could you compete? Evelyn, after hearing what you said, I understand now that you never really considered Mabel a friend; you never truly respected her."
"Yes, I looked down on her. Do you really respect her? Aren’t you jealous?" Evelyn questioned, with a hint of madness in her eyes.
"If we were friends, there’s nothing to look down on or to be jealous of. I can only feel happy for Mabel if she finds a good boyfriend," Alice Conley replied.
"Easier said than done! When you are worried about small money in the future, and Mabel Quinn is living a life of luxury, I don’t believe you can still say such things!" Evelyn said sharply.
Alice Conley stood up, "From now on, we’re no longer friends. I, Alice Conley, don’t have a friend like you. You simply don’t understand what friendship is! After all your scheming, is this the result you wanted?" After saying this, she turned and left.
Evelyn watched Alice Conley’s back, suddenly lowered her head, and began to cry. A moment’s misjudgment led her to this end. Yesterday her mother came and said that none of the well-known lawyers in J City were willing to take her case. She also mentioned that her case could result in a prison sentence of 3-7 years. Whether she pleaded guilty or not, she would be sentenced, and pleading guilty might result in a lighter sentence. If not, the sentence might be more severe.
Now, she regretted her naivety. She thought her meticulous plan, in the eyes of those professionals, was probably full of loopholes.
How could she have been so naive to think she could drag Mabel Quinn down with her? To think she could get closer to Kyle Kinston this way? But now, regret had become meaningless.
When Alice Conley left the detention center, she saw Mabel Quinn outside.
"Mabel, what brings you here? Did you come to see Evelyn too?" Alice Conley approached and asked.
"I initially wanted to see her, to ask why she did this, but once I got here, I realized that even asking has no real meaning," Mabel Quinn said. "Did you come to see her?"
Alice Conley nodded, "She was too naive and too easily jealous. So was I, for not realizing it earlier. If I had noticed, I might have been able to stop her, and perhaps this could have been avoided."
"It’s not your fault, don’t blame yourself," Mabel Quinn said.
