Mabel Quinn got into Daniel Harris’s car, still a bit dazed. It wasn’t until his fingers gently brushed the wound on her forehead that she inhaled sharply and came back to her senses.
Almost instinctively, she tilted her head back, avoiding his fingers, then said, "Thank you for earlier. If it’s convenient, could you please stop the car at the next station."
He discreetly withdrew his hand but instructed the Driver in the front seat, "To the Hospital."
"This minor wound doesn’t need a Hospital visit," she quickly said. At most, she could just get some medication from the pharmacy.
"I never like to bargain with people," he said mildly, reverting to his usual detached elegance.
Mabel pressed her lips together and remained silent. The atmosphere in the car suddenly became somewhat oppressive.
"Next time, before acting as a stand-in for someone, at least take care of your own safety first," his voice suddenly broke the silence.
"Oh," she responded, acknowledging her lack of experience. She hadn’t expected such a riot to break out when she was discovered earlier.
"Has your cold gotten better?" he asked.
She coughed once, then replied, without so much as blushing or gasping, "It’s better."
His thin lips tightened, "Do you really have to talk to me ? Can’t you be like before?" This distance made him uncomfortable and made him long for their earlier interactions. Back when she didn’t know his identity, she used to communicate with him so naturally, making him feel a long-lost sense of ease.
But now, all of that was gone.
Mabel bit her lip. He had just saved her, and she was grateful, yet she found it hard to face him as she used to. Was it really just because he had hidden his identity from her? Or was it because his eyes reminded her too much of that big brother from her old village, the one who had been through thick and thin with her? Was that why she almost instinctively regarded him as a friend from the start, making it all the harder to accept the deception?
Honestly, aside from hiding his identity, he hadn’t lied to her about anything else.
"I’m grateful you saved me, but I’m just a small screenwriter at Morningstar. Wanting to be friends with you was just me overestimating myself," she said.
In the end, he wasn’t the big brother she knew back then, no matter how much their eyes resembled each other.
Daniel Harris suddenly snorted coldly, "What a presumptuous notion." He hadn’t spoken to anyone with such patience in a long time, yet here she was, shutting him down.
But seeing her now, head lowered, with a swollen forehead, a frustration lingered in his chest, unable to rise or subside.
At the Hospital, after registering, the doctor examined Mabel’s forehead wound and confirmed it was just a superficial injury, nothing serious, and prescribed some medication.
"Thank you, I can go back on my own," Mabel said politely, then took the medication, intent on leaving.
Daniel Harris suddenly grabbed Mabel Quinn’s arm, forcing her to stop. She turned her head to look at him curiously, "Mr. Harris, is there something else?"
Mr. Harris... those three words were so harsh on the ears.
