Extra Basket Chapter 169

Time: 4:19 left in the 3rd Quarter

The moment Ethan stood up, the atmosphere around the court shifted.

His teammates glanced his way.

Not because he barked an order.

Not because he said anything smart.

But because the storm that had built inside him...

...was now cracking open.

His sneakers hit the floor like a drumbeat.

His eyes locked forward, gaze cutting straight across the hardwood.

Right at Kagetsu Renjiro.

Kagetsu, arms crossed, tilted his head slightly.

But his shoulders tensed ever so slightly.

Ethan cracked his neck once, rolled his shoulders back.

Then shouted, not at anyone but to everyone.

Brandon Young stepped in beside him, bumping his chest lightly.

Ryan Taylor grinned, already clenching his fists.

Evan Cooper pointed forward, nodding with sharp clarity.

Aiden White popped his neck and said nothing but the hunger in his stance said it all.

The five stood ready.

The lineup of grit. The lineup built not from stats or glory...

Ethan glanced up at the scoreboard again.

He took one step past half-court, and met Kagetsu’s eyes full-on.

(You’re the lightning, huh?)

(Then I’ll be the sky that doesn’t break — even when it’s torn apart.)

Kagetsu blinked once.

It was acknowledgment.

The referee’s whistle blew.

Evan took the ball, slapping it with purpose.

Third quarter wasn’t over.

But for Ethan Albarado?

His game was just beginning.

SCORE: Vorpal 47 – Roanoke 39

The ball was inbounded.

Evan Cooper zipped it toward Ethan at the wing.

Ethan caught it and didn’t wait.

His foot hit the court once, and...

He exploded forward like a firecracker.

Kagetsu was already moving.

Across the court, the Roanoke bench tensed.

Coach Halter crossed his arms slowly. His eyes narrowed.

"He’s not just running. He’s reading."

Kagetsu’s eyes sharpened. His instincts forged from hundreds of battles, from street courts to elite gyms kicked in.

But what he saw next...

Cross behind the back.

Step-back hesitation.

—No, wrap-around dribble behind the leg—

Kagetsu had faced elite guards.

Speedsters. Magicians. Ball-handling prodigies.

This was pattern-breaking.

(He’s not moving fast just to escape me...)

(He’s moving fast to make me think he’s not thinking—but he is.)

Ethan’s head never tilted down.

His eyes never left the floor... and yet they saw everything.

Malik Okafor stepped up from the paint to hedge the drive—

Bounce pass. Backdoor.

Ryan Taylor cut perfect timing but then stopped as the defense collapsed...

Ethan flipped it back with a no-look touch pass—

Evan Cooper caught, drove baseline, faked the handoff, kicked it back to Ethan.

One bounce. Pull-back.

He had been chasing the ghost of Ethan’s dribble not the real one.

(He played me... like a puzzle piece.)

From the Roanoke bench, Carter "Clutch Kid" Voss

"Yo, Coach... are we gonna adjust or—?"

Coach Halter held up a hand.

Ethan shifted his weight.

He didn’t call for a screen.

Kagetsu dropped into stance again, jaw tight now.

"So this is your game, huh?"

Ethan’s voice was calm.

"No. This is just the start."

He stepped in. Drove hard. Kagetsu mirrored

No—faked the spin. Step-through. Cross. Step-back.

But the shot was already gone.

SCORE: Vorpal 50 – Roanoke 39

Ayumi slammed her clipboard in the air.

Louie threw his water bottle up in celebration.

Coonie just smirked and muttered:

"So this is Ethan when he stops thinking..."

Lucas focus only on Ethan

Back on the court, Kagetsu landed lightly, staring at the arc where the ball had flown.

He just said quietly:

"You’ve earned this round."

But inside, his thoughts surged.

(Let’s see how long you can keep it up, Albarado...)

(Because now... the thunder comes for real.)

SCORE: Vorpal 50 – Roanoke 39

Possession: Roanoke Storm

The ball was inbounded. Marcus "Flash" Daniels (#1) caught it mid-stride, sneakers slicing through the hardwood.

"Run Thunder Arrow!" Coach Halter barked.

The entire court shifted.

Not just a play a formation.

Tyrese Caldwell sprinted off a double screen, drawing defenders wide.

Andre "Tank" Malone barreled forward and screened Ryan Taylor off balance.

Malik Okafor rumbled to the post.

But that wasn’t the core.

The real storm came from behind the shadows.

He moved like a whisper and a roar at the same time — first walking, then sprinting like a damn bullet. He received the pass from Marcus at the top of the key.

Foot in front. Eyes alert.

Spin-back behind the back.

Each bounce hit like a thunderclap sharp, violent, decisive.

Ethan gritted his teeth, shifting side to side, matching Kagetsu’s every twitch

"NOW!" Kagetsu shouted.

Tyrese darted from the corner, catching a hot handoff. Aiden rotated, but it was a feint. Tyrese flipped it right back like a slingshot.

Kagetsu had never stopped.

He leapt off two feet.

Ayumi covered her mouth.

Even Louie went silent.

Kagetsu Renjiro flew.

Like a bolt of fury straight into the rim.

SCORE: Vorpal 50 – Roanoke 41

Kagetsu dropped from the rim, landing in a three-point crouch.

"This is still my storm."

Ethan clenched his fists.

The gym was still echoing with the BOOM from Kagetsu Renjiro’s thunderous dunk. Fans roared, the scoreboard flashed:

Vorpal 50 – Roanoke 41

On the second row of the home bleachers, the Oak Hill Thunderhawks sat huddled in their matching silver hoodies. Their eyes locked on the court, not a single one blinking.

Charlotte Graves stood with her arms folded, short hair as she watched the court.

"...They’re starting to trade haymakers," she muttered.

Beside her, Izzy Moreno nudged her with a exaggerated faec.

"That was nasty, like—scary nasty.Did you hear that slam? My ribs shook!"

Charlotte didn’t flinch. "They will be fine. They always bounce back."

A few seats down, Lena Kowalski whistled.

"Forget that—did you see Ethan’s drive earlier? Yo... that boy’s got fire."

Sakura Tanaka leaned forward, elbows on knees.

"He’s not just skilled. He’s smart. Reads the court like chess." She blinked, then grinned. "Also... not gonna lie. He kinda hot."

"Sakura!" gasped Carmen Delgado, but even she couldn’t hide the tiny smile curling on her lips.

Eva Johansson chuckled softly. "Hot and composed. That’s dangerous. He’s like... brainy basketball anime protagonist vibes."

Natalie "Nattie" Carter fanned her face jokingly. "Okay, but like, if he looks at me with those calm, calculating eyes, I’m melting. Instantly."

Mina El-Sayed deadpanned, "You would melt if the water fountain looked at you, Nattie."

Then, Clara van der Meer cracked her knuckles. "Still not enough to stop Kagetsu. That boy’s a beast. Like... I’d block him, but I’d probably lose a rib."

Charlotte finally exhaled, glancing down at the court.

Lucas was focused again, nodding to Ethan after the last possession. Ethan stood tall, still locked in, unfazed by the dunk, ready for the next play.

"They’re adapting," Charlotte said softly.

"And Ethan..." she paused.

Then gave the faintest smile.

"He’s just getting started."

The moment the inbound touched Ethan’s fingertips—

Kagetsu was already moving.

"Full-court press. Let’s go!" Coach Halter’s voice echoed behind the Storm bench.

Tyrese Caldwell and Marcus "Flash" Daniels jumped the lanes like wolves. But Vorpal didn’t panic.

Evan Cooper slipped back behind the press, caught Ethan’s side pass with a gliding step, and zipped it up the sideline.

"GO, GO!" Ethan barked.

Aiden caught the ball in motion, tucked it under for a controlled dribble, then hit the brakes spinning it back out to Ethan.

Kagetsu stepped up, eyes locked.

"Come on," Kagetsu muttered. "Show me something real."

Ethan’s breath slowed.

(This move... isn’t in the book.)

He drove right. Hard.

Ethan Euro-stepped left, pivoted with his back turned and whipped a behind-the-back bounce pass to Ryan Taylor, who’d slipped off Andre Malone’s blindside.

"OH MY WORD—ETHAN WITH THE SLEIGHT OF HAND!! That wasn’t just ball movement, that was stage magic!"

"That pass—he baited Kagetsu! He sold the drive like an actor, then flipped it into a paint attack! That’s high-level misdirection!"

Score: Vorpal 52 – Roanoke 41

But there was no time to breathe.

Roanoke snapped the ball in fast.

Marcus "Flash" Daniels tore through the middle, blurring like light through a tunnel.

Louie (from the bench):

Flash skipped the pass to Tyrese Caldwell—

Three points. Cold. Clean. Efficient.

Score: Vorpal 52 – Roanoke 44

Ethan wiped his forehead again.

(They’re picking the rhythm back up...)

He looked at Kagetsu who was grinning again.

"Ask me after I break your zone."

Kagetsu’s smile faded, but his eyes sharpened.

This wasn’t a game anymore.

The ball found Ethan at the top of the arc.

Kagetsu was crouched low, hands loose, body bouncing. Watching everything. Reading.

(This is basketball.)

(The court. The rhythm. The pressure. The tempo. The noise.)

He jab-stepped right. Kagetsu didn’t bite.

(Not a war of strength. A war of trust.)

Ethan passed it off to Evan Cooper, who quickly swung it to Aiden on the wing.

Roanoke’s defense rotated fast. Too fast.

They were gambling on anticipation. On patterns.

Ethan sprinted across the baseline.

Quick drop bounce to the corner.

Ethan caught it in motion. No dribble. Just rise. Fire.

The rebound shot skyward up for grabs.

Malik Okafor leapt first.

But Brandon Young shoved him mid-air just enough.

Brandon tipped the ball back to Ryan, who grabbed it and went straight up

Andre "Tank" Malone swatted it!

But the ball ricocheted...

Right into Ethan’s hands.

(Don’t think. Just feel.)

Mid-range jumper. Clean.

"AND ETHAN MAKES THEM PAY ON THE RECYCLE! Persistence turns to points!"

"That’s trust. That’s floor awareness. That’s basketball."

Score: Vorpal 54 – Roanoke 44

Kagetsu didn’t speak. He just turned and motioned for the inbound.

He was done smiling now.

Ethan took a breath, chest rising.

(This game... this court... this fight...)

(This is basketball.)
