Extra Basket Chapter 176

Ethan Albarado stood alone at center court.

His hands rested on his hips. His breathing was deep but steady. Sweat dripped down his temple, soaking the ends of his yellow-blonde hair. He looked at the scoreboard once more, then slowly closed his eyes.

(Not perfect... but I saw the window. I just kept prying it open until it cracked.)

Around him, his teammates were slumped on the bench, laughing, crying, or just breathing. Victory didn’t always look like celebration. Sometimes, it looked like exhaustion.

Louie Davas had both fists raised high, as if holding up the sky.

Evan Cooper lay flat on the gym floor, his chest rising and falling like a balloon.

Brandon Young was getting checked by the team trainer, while still grinning like a kid on Christmas morning.

Ryan and Aiden sat side by side, talking in quiet tones, sharing the same stunned look like they still didn’t fully believe what just happened.

Lucas Graves leaned against the wall, wiping his face with a towel. Calm. Focused. Still processing.

The crowd, once deafening, had quieted into murmurs.

The adrenaline was fading... and reality was settling in.

From the Broadcaster Booth

"And there it is! Vorpal Basket — the so-called dark horses from Virginia — have taken down the Roanoke Storm!" Jamie, the commentator, could barely contain his excitement.

Coach Doyle leaned into the mic, eyes still glued to the court.

"This team isn’t just lucky. They’re built different. That’s trust, chemistry, and real leadership. Remember their names."

Meanwhile on Kagetsu side

Kagetsu Renjiro sat at the edge of the bench, elbows resting on his knees, a white towel draped over his head like a shroud. His chest still rose and fell from the relentless storm he had unleashed on the court.

But his eyes weren’t on the scoreboard anymore.

They were on the floor.

Aware of what stirred inside him tonight. What rose and burned and cracked through the surface like thunder splitting the sky.

Coach Halter leaned in beside him, folding his arms.

His voice was low, calm just enough to cut through the noise.

"You felt it, didn’t you?"

Kagetsu didn’t respond right away.

The gym buzzed around them with distant footsteps, distant cheers, but his world was narrowed to this moment.

Then, with a low voice:

"I awakened something..." he clenched his fist, trembling slightly, "...but it’s not enough."

Coach Halter glanced at him, the corner of his mouth twitching with the shadow of a smile.

"It’s not that it’s not enough."

He paused, his tone steady, assuring.

"It’s just that you’re new to that strength. You barely scratched the surface, Kagetsu."

Kagetsu turned his head slightly, the towel slipping off to reveal his sweat-soaked hair.

Coach Halter looked him in the eye.

"Now?" He nodded once.

"We train it. Properly. When we get back to Hidden Valley — we build it. Together."

Kagetsu stared for a moment longer. Then gave a firm nod.

Across the bench, Dante Walker had been watching.

He didn’t say anything. But he saw the exchange. He felt it in his bones — the weight of Kagetsu’s growth, and his own stillness in comparison.

(They’re moving forward... and I’m just stuck here.)

But something shifted in his chest. A flicker of heat. Of clarity.

He bit the inside of his cheek.

Then slowly looked at Coach Halter.

(No more sulking. No more blaming. I need to change too... or I’ll be left behind.)

Because if Kagetsu was evolving...

...then he had to catch up

Meanwhile in Ethan side

Ayumi Brooke moved through the bench area, hands full with towels and water bottles. Her steps were steady but just barely. If you looked closely, you’d see it: the faint trembling in her fingers. The shimmer behind her eyes.

She wasn’t just tired.

The kind of overwhelmed that only comes after watching your team bleed, rise, and win.

She stopped in front of Ethan Albarado, who had finally sat down. His jersey clung to him, soaked in sweat. His hair stuck to his forehead, and the towel around his shoulders hung like a heavy, worn-out cape one carried only by warriors who’d seen through a storm.

Beside him sat Lucas Graves he is steady, but with the weight of everything in his calm gaze.

Ayumi crouched down in front of them, holding out water.

Her voice was soft, warm, barely audible under the noise of the arena still settling.

She looked at both of them not just as players, but as the heart of the team.

Ethan exhaled slowly.

He looked past Ayumi, toward the rest of the court to where their teammates were still basking in it.

Evan Cooper was bumping fists with Brandon Young, both laughing breathlessly.

Ryan Taylor was sprawled out flat on the hardwood, arms stretched wide like he was about to fly.

Louie had dropped to his knees and was thanking the ceiling.

And for once, Jeremy smiled

Kai and Coonie smile together with Jeremy

Ethan met Lucas’s eyes and they shared it, that wordless understanding.

Then Ethan turned back to Ayumi, and said quietly:

🔊 GYM ANNOUNCEMENT (OVER THE SPEAKERS):

"Congratulations to Oak Hill Academy’s Vorpal Basket. You have officially advanced to the National Bracket. Matchups will be posted by midnight."

Then the gym exploded.

Louie let out a war cry and literally leapt onto Brandon’s back, almost taking him down with a grin.

Evan screamed and pumped both fists in the air.

Coonie stood and shouted so loud it cracked his voice:

Lucas let out a rare, genuine, toothy grin, the kind that made even the stoic ones on the team chuckle.

He stood back up slowly, heart thudding, his breath steady now. He let the wave of emotion roll over him, let it settle in his bones like warm electricity.

He didn’t smile wide, but his eyes burned with something real.
