Extra Basket Chapter 201

Elijah Rainn took a step forward.

No longer just the point guard.

His sweat-dampened jersey clung to his shoulders. His jaw was still, but his voice cut clean through the quiet locker room.

"We rotate the bench for the first half of the third quarter."

Then, a twist in the air, like a matchstick struck.

"Not to rest..." he said, eyes locked with each of his teammates,

"...but to give me time."

One by one, they began to rise.

Like roots stirring beneath soil.

Like old things awakening.

The first to stand. His dribble always low, shoulders loose, eyes like still water.

Didn’t chase highlights.

But when he entered the court... something changed.

Vorpal’s tempo shaken. Tilted. Like trying to sprint through deep surf.

They’d call him slow. Passive.

But when the tide pulls you, you don’t notice until your feet are gone.

Tall. Narrow-shouldered. Hands like a pianist’s.

(I don’t shoot to score.)

(I shoot to remind you I’m watching.)

Brandon’s presence was a question.

A cold wind on the back of the neck.

By the time you turned to check if he was still there...

You were already down two.

The whisper in the press. The shiver in the lane.

(They won’t even see me coming.)

He wasn’t after steals.

He didn’t lunge or gamble.

He appeared where passes broke.

Where guards hesitated.

Make dribblers look over their shoulders.

Vorpal’s plays unraveled — one ghost step at a time.

Broad. Heavy-footed. Calm like a mountain.

(They’ll feel me before they fear me.)

He set screens that rattled spines.

Raymond didn’t speak often, but when he turned into the lane...

The sound of collision followed.

He was the whole damn tree.

Thick legs. Quiet eyes. Moved like the Earth slow, but unstoppable.

(I’m not fast. I’m not flashy.)

(But I am immovable.)

Hands up. Knees bent.

Guards would fly into the paint like lightning.

And bounce off like nothing had ever happened.

Elijah turned to each of them now.

Five parts of the forest.

"Until I say otherwise."

Their answer came in breath steady.

This wasn’t about flash.

This was about rhythm.

Outside, the crowd was still screaming.

The echo of Vorpal’s wildness rang in the arena.

But inside the Forest locker room?

The storm had passed.

It was time for something else to rise.

It always grows back.

The buzzer echoed like a thunderclap.

The air in the gym rippled with pressure — the kind that settled deep in the chest, humming with unsaid tension. Every seat was filled. Every camera pointed. Every breath seemed held.

The scoreboard glowed:

47 – 43. Vorpal Basket leads.

Ayumi stood beside the bench clipboard, brows furrowed.

Coach Fred, arms folded tight, muttered,

"They’re not sending out their starters..."

Ayumi’s eyes narrowed.

"Wait, that’s not Elijah..."

From across the court, the other bench stirred.

Not the forest of giants that had stormed out earlier.

But five new shadows.

Just stillness. Like fog drifting into a battlefield.

Forest’s Bench Unit Takes the Court

Brandon Yu – "Glacier Trigger"

He walked to the wing without a word. No warm-up. No theatrics.

(First look. First shot. That’s all I need.)

A sniper’s calm behind tired eyes.

Nolan Reyes – "The Calm Pulse"

He bounced the ball once.

Then sank low to the hardwood like liquid.

(Tempo is mine. They just don’t know it yet.)

Felix Carter – "Shadow Gap"

Didn’t high-five a soul.

He just took his defensive spot.

(This court belongs to ghosts now.)

Raymond Chen – "Iron Branch"

A center who didn’t budge.

Arms wide. Legs planted.

(I’m not here to impress. I’m here to break screens.)

Marcus Doyle – "Deep Root"

He was the last to cross half-court.

He stood arms by his side like stone carved from the Earth.

On Vorpal’s side, Lucas Graves cracked his neck.

Evan glanced to his right.

"...The starters are resting?"

"Elijah’s buying time."

Ryan tugged his headband tighter.

Josh tapped his elbow sleeve.

Brandon Young stood poised by the free throw line, eyes sharp.

"Alright boys. They’re trying to smother our flame."

"Let’s see if they can handle fire... without burning out first."

Nolan Reyes took the inbound calmly.

He dribbled low, coiling down like water drawing into itself.

Nolan absorbed the moment, then — SNAP! a sudden bounce pass to Felix Carter cutting through a seam.

The bench didn’t cheer.

The Forest players didn’t even blink.

Coach Fred leapt off his seat.

"WHO WAS SUPPOSED TO CONTEST THAT?!"

Ayumi gripped her clipboard, knuckles white.

(They’re resetting the pace...)

(They’re playing like a metronome. Every move... planned. Timed. Cold.)

He called for a triangle motion.

Josh cut through the left side, open.

He rose for a mid-range jumper.

Felix Carter. Out of nowhere.

"WHERE THE HELL DID HE COME FROM?!" Ryan shouted, spinning.

Forest ignites a fast break

Nolan to Raymond a skip pass, Brandon Yu pulls up from the key

49 – 47. Forest leads.

Like it had been punched in the lungs.

"...They’re executing like robots."

"They’re not just holding the lead..."

"...they’re tilting the floor back their way."

Lucas’s gaze drifted to the Forest bench—

And there sat Elijah.

Like a general watching a chessboard.

(You’re watching how we crack, huh?)

(Waiting for the wobble... the hesitation... the heat stroke.)

Lucas’s eyes narrowed.

He clenched his fists.

(We’re not breaking.)

(We’re about to burn brighter.)

The fire hadn’t dimmed.

It was just waiting to erupt.

The gym still buzzed from Brandon Yu’s second straight bucket, a tight, hanging floater that kissed glass like it was planned since childhood.

But on the Vorpal side?

Just two players meeting eyes at the top of the arc.

Lucas Graves. Evan Cooper.

One: fire in his blood.

The other: chess in his mind.

Evan wiped the sweat from his temple, crouched slightly into his stance, and whispered behind his mouthguard:

"They’re baiting us into rushing. The slower they go, the more impatient we get. It’s a tempo trap."

Lucas nodded slowly, spinning the ball once behind his back before letting it rest in his palm, then bouncing it rhythmically tap-tap... pause... tap.

"Then we slow it down too."

Evan frowned. "Even slower?"

"That’s playing into their hands."

"No. We look like we’re slowing down. But we strike between beats. Off-rhythm."

Lucas said, "Like Ethan."

Vorpal came up the court deliberately slow.

Evan walked the ball up, letting the defense settle, almost daring them to get comfortable.

Even Nolan Reyes blinked, confused at the sudden shift.

Forest fell into position tight man, hedged zone help.

They formed a wide arc.

Brandon Young in the post.

Ryan Taylor stretching near the baseline.

Josh Turner hovering just outside the wing.

He drifted like mist—nonchalant, off-ball, relaxed.

Like a spark to gasoline—

Lucas curled sharply around a pin-down from Brandon Young—a sudden, slashing cut across the free-throw line.

He passed mid-dribble before the curl even finished.

A one-touch bounce pass, tight angle, leading perfectly.

Lucas caught it in full stride

He froze the help with a shoulder tilt

Then kicked it to the corner.

One controlled dribble in.

Forest’s bench shifted.

Coach Nguyen rubbed his chin.

Ayden Liu leaned forward, elbows on knees.

Still watching. Still silent.

But his fingers tapped rhythmically on his knee.

(Lucas and Evan... they’re beginning to overlap reads.)

Nolan Reyes brought it up.

But Lucas didn’t bite.

Instead, he subtly guided Evan to apply a longer closeout on Brandon Yu—anticipating the rotation two steps early.

Coonie Smith barked from the bench, "That’s it! Box it in!"

But the pass came late.

Brandon had to force a leaning fade.

Ryan Taylor snagged the board.

Quick outlet to Evan.

Lucas bolted wide left.

Josh darted baseline.

Brandon Young posted mid-lane.

Ryan fake-screened high.

It looked like motion madness—but to Evan?

A back pass no look whipped behind to where Lucas was already cutting from the corner.

Felix Carter lunged almost stole it—

But Lucas leaned in-air, caught it with one hand at his hip—

51 – 49. Vorpal takes the lead.

Ayumi punched the air.

Louie, grinning on the bench, chuckled:

"I’ll give him three more plays before I tag back in."

"Lucas and Evan... are reading sheet music together now."

"They’re playing feel-first now."

"And just like that — Vorpal regains the lead! 51 to 49! Lucas Graves, the mimic... has found his rhythm. And Evan Cooper, the point guard with a brain like a maze — is right there with him!"

(If I stay on the bench too long... they’ll start pulling away.)

(But if I go in too early... they’ll adapt to me before the 4th quarter.)

Coach Nguyen looked over

But Elijah shook his head.

Lucas looked at Evan.

Evan looked at Lucas.

(Let’s play our game.)
