As her classmate made such a request, Xie Wanying thought it over and decided as long as her classmate was happy, that was all that mattered.
“Yingying, we can discuss more privately,” Zhao Zhaowei said as he took out a notebook to record the case they had just reviewed.
Xie Wanying smiled and nodded. After several years as classmates, she felt that everyone in her class was really nice, even though she was the only female among boys.
Suddenly, the curtain next to the two of them was pulled aside, revealing Doctor Jiang’s face.
“I’m heading out on a call. It’s a traffic accident victim. Are you coming?” Doctor Jiang asked them.
“We’re coming!” Zhao Zhaowei shouted first.
Doctor Jiang laughed, “Let’s go. I’ve already spoken to Doctor Lin.”
Two clinical novices hurried after Doctor Jiang, swiftly making their way out of the emergency building. The ambulance that had long been prepared was waiting in the courtyard. A nurse was already seated inside. Seeing there were several people following, Doctor Jiang sat in the front passenger seat.
Xie Wanying and Zhao Zhaowei climbed into the ambulance.
No sooner had the ambulance doors closed than the siren wailed loudly, and the ambulance bolted through the hospital’s emergency gate.
Dispatching an ambulance from 120 follows the principle of proximity, meaning the nearest hospital sends a vehicle. However, if the nearby hospital’s ambulances are already out, the dispatch has to find another one further away. Sometimes, in such cases, the ambulance journey can be much longer than one would expect.
And this time, that’s exactly what happened.
As the ambulance made its way, Zhao Zhaowei glanced out of the window and noticed something was amiss with the roads. As a local unlike Xie Wanying who didn’t understand the city’s main traffic routes, he said, “Looks like we might have to take the expressway. Are we heading out of the city?”
Whether they were going out of the city or not, Xie Wanying could only see the long line of cars on the opposite side of the road, clearly indicating a traffic jam.
Along with the rise of the national economy, more people are buying cars. The Capital, being rather extravagant, was among the first major cities to frequently experience traffic congestion. Thus, even during the extended New Year holidays, those returning from outings in the suburbs in the evening would find themselves stuck in traffic.
While the return path was congested, thankfully, the road the ambulance needed to take was clear. Nevertheless, the ambulance seemed to drive on endlessly as if there were no end to the road.
It appeared that Zhao Zhaowei had guessed correctly.
Xie Wanying turned to the nurse, “Sister, is that a monitor?”
In the past couple of days, she had become acquainted with the emergency nurses, who all wanted her to call them “sister.” Xie Wanying was also happy to foster closer relationships with her nurse mentors.
The nurses at Guoxie Emergency Department were elites, selected from the most senior nurses in the wards. Moreover, Guoxie’s nursing program was the most renowned in the nation. Nurses graduated as junior college students, all retained by their own hospital. Junior college graduates could only work as nursing assistants, and it was only the university graduates who could start working as nurses. “Yes.” Knowing her eagerness to learn, the nurse immediately informed her, pointing out the various emergency equipment and items in the ambulance. For instance, Guoxie’s ambulances were equipped with two emergency medicine kits, just in case.
Xie Wanying and Zhao Zhaowei took out their pens and carefully noted down the information, striving to learn.
After an hour’s drive, the ambulance finally arrived at the scene of the accident.
Not far away was the site of the traffic accident, cordoned off by the traffic police. Upon seeing the ambulance arrive, they promptly opened the yellow cordon to let it pass. At that moment, the ambulance was like a warrior charging to the front lines, only armed not with swords but with medicine.
“Here they come, the ambulance is here! The doctors have arrived, make way quickly!” the police officer shouted to clear the path.
