Famous Among Top Surgeons in the 90s Chapter 280

Chapter 280: 【280】Go to orthopedics to borrow something Chapter 280: 【280】Go to orthopedics to borrow something “I know.” Luo Yanfen tried to steady her footing, not sure for whom her “I know” was intended, and immediately lowered her head to follow the nurse.

Xie Wanying stood by the fire exit and noticed that as she walked past, Luo Yanfen didn’t seem to see anyone, indicating that her mental state might not be very stable.

In such a state, it was easy to make mistakes at work. With this thought, Xie Wanying followed her.

Several people hurried to the ward.

Whoosh, whoosh, whoosh, the gurney rushed the emergency patient into the ward.

It was a male patient, thin, in his thirties, said to be a white-collar salesman who had experienced a gastrointestinal bleed several days ago, possibly due to excessive drinking at a business event. It had been a few days, and finally, his body couldn’t take it anymore, so he came to the hospital emergency room for care.

Upon arrival, his face and lips were as pale as paper, his head covered in cold sweat and his face twisted with pain, indicating that his condition was already quite grave. It was said that he had vomited multiple times at home and in the emergency room, with the vomit resembling the color of coffee, just a step away from vomiting blood, leading to the suspicion of a major stomach bleed.

Since the emergency department was reportedly overwhelmed with patients, this patient hadn’t had time for any thorough examinations and was sent straight up to the ward when a bed became available. One look at the patient’s condition was enough to tell it was serious.

Wondering how late she would have to work this evening, Luo Yanfen looked worriedly and quickly made her way toward the patient, pulling a stethoscope from the pocket of her white coat as she did so.

She listened to the patient’s heart, lungs, and bowel sounds, while directing the nurse, “Put him on the cardiac monitor.”

“We don’t have a bedside cardiac monitor anymore, Dr. Luo,” the nurse replied.

No monitor, what now? Luo Yanfen thought to herself.

Having caught up, Xie Wanying discussed with the senior nurse, “Can we borrow a monitor from another department? We’ll write a borrowing slip. I’ll go to the other departments to borrow one.”

This newcomer sure thinks fast. Luo Yanfen glanced back at Xie Wanying, her eyes asking: What are you up to?

Trying to catch me out again? Looking to curry favor with the professors?

Xie Wanying said, “Dr. Luo, let me help you.”

As if I’d believe that. Luo Yanfen turned her head away. There was no benefit in helping her. Studying for a Ph.D., the most ruthless phase of one’s academic journey, where one hardly finds anyone willing to help.

Ph.D. candidates are adults facing major career path decisions. They have their own private worries and have long outgrown their childish student days. Helping someone might just mean falling into a pit yourself.

You said you wanted to improve our team relations before, didn’t you? Didn’t you say you wouldn’t get involved with me? So why are you here now, trying to ingratiate yourself? Luo Yanfen grumbled internally.

The nurse went back to call the other departments, wrote a borrowing slip, and handed it to Xie Wanying: “Dr. Xie, please go borrow from Orthopedics Three, across from our department.”

Without delay, Xie Wanying took the borrowing slip stamped with the department’s seal, turned, and sprinted away, dashing to the Orthopedics Three ward across the way.

Arriving at the nurses’ station in orthopedics, she found the senior nurse and explained the situation: “I’d like to borrow a monitor. I’m from General Surgery Department Two. They said you’d been called and had agreed to lend one.”

“We do have one to spare. I just need to check with our doctors to make sure it’s okay,” the nurse replied.

Xie Wanying stood to the side, waiting anxiously.

Heading to the on-call doctors’ room, the nurse went in to discuss with the doctor inside: “Someone from General Surgery Department Two is here to borrow one, saying they have a very urgent case and no monitors left.”

“Is it a doctor from General Surgery Department Two? I haven’t seen them before.” The on-call doctor peeked out to see Xie Wanying, wary of a stranger potentially walking off with their equipment.
