Chapter 38 - The Marrow Code
The chamber convulsed.
The moment Elric's palm touched the final vertebra, the bone lit from within—lines of gold rushing along its surface like veins igniting. The table beneath it pulsed, and the air rippled outward in silent waves.
Lira stumbled back as the roots overhead flared crimson—then snapped white.
"Elric!" she shouted.
He couldn't answer.
His vision had gone white. His body still stood in the chamber, motionless, but his mind—
It was somewhere else.

Inside the Root
He stood in a field of marrow-white grass.
A vast sky stretched above him—empty, silent, and sickly red.
In front of him: a woman in healer's robes, her face veiled in woven roots. Her voice was both kind and tired.
> "You entered the spine."
"Who are you?" Elric asked.
> "The first. The one who began the Root's shaping. I bound memory into blood, because our kings kept forgetting pain."
> "So you turned pain into control."
> "No. Into record. But they corrupted it. They made it a leash."
She raised a hand. The grass around them curled, becoming symbols. Histories. Names.
> "You are the fifth to reach this place, Elric Taran. And the first to come as a healer."
Elric stepped forward. "Then tell me how to undo it."
The woman paused.
> "You can't undo memory. But you can let it go."
> "How?"
> "By giving it to the world."

The Real World
Lira held Elric's shoulders as his body trembled—light rising around him like a cocoon.
"Come back," she whispered. "Don't do this alone."
The roots above hissed violently. They were trying to pull him deeper. Trying to reclaim the marrow.
But Elric's sigil flared—brighter than ever.
The spine cracked.
Not in destruction—but in release.
From it, silver threads of memory flew outward—flooding the chamber, passing through the stone, up the staircase, and into the palace.

Cai fell to his knees in the street.
He gasped—then saw them.
Flashes.
Not of pain. Of truth.
The first Root-binder's oath. The betrayal of the bloodline. The Council branding Elric's family as dangerous because they could not be controlled.
Cai whispered, "It's happening."
Selene, standing at the edge of the city gates, bowed her head. "The world is remembering."

Elric collapsed to one knee.
The spine turned to ash behind him—its purpose fulfilled. The table cracked.
And the ceiling above shifted—revealing a single beam of sunlight, breaking through the Root network like a knife of clarity.
Lira knelt beside him.
"Elric?"
He looked at her, eyes filled with exhaustion—but calm.
"It's done," he said. "I didn't destroy the Root. I set the memories free."
"You changed the system?"
He nodded weakly. "I rewrote the marrow."
Then he slumped forward—and the chamber went still.
