Chapter 45 - The Hollowveil Tree
The bark opened like breath.
Smooth. Seamless. Alive.
Elric hesitated for only a moment. Then stepped forward, his boots landing softly on silver roots that curved inward like ribs. Lira followed without a word, one hand brushing the bark as they passed inside.
The moment they crossed the threshold, the forest behind them vanished.
No sound. No air. Just silence thick as water.
The tree had swallowed them whole.

Inside the Sanctum
Light came not from torches but from the walls themselves—soft pulses of white-blue glow, like veins gently glowing beneath skin. The chamber was wide, circular, the ceiling high and hollow.
Etched into the wood above were countless names—spiraling upward, overlapping in layers.
Elric stopped walking.
"These are..."
"Memories," Serenith said, appearing behind them. "Not written. Grown."
She moved to the center of the chamber and placed a hand against a raised knot in the wall. A line of light flickered upward—then images appeared in the bark.
Not illusions. Not magic.
Memory, alive.

The Root, Rewritten
The vision played silently.
A gathering of humans and elves around a young tree—silver, untouched, its roots still small.
> A pact was made. Not for power. For preservation. The tree was meant to remember pain, so it would never be repeated.
Then came another image—kings with masks, cutting into the bark. Carving in false names. Rewriting old wounds to suit new crowns.
> The Council severed truth from memory. They planted obedience in its place. And the Root obeyed.
Lira clenched her jaw.
"They infected the original system," Elric said. "Turned memory into a weapon."
Serenith nodded.
"You were born from their error. But you were shaped by something else."
Another image flared—Elric as a child, unconscious, his wrist already bearing the faint sigil. Over him, a shadow loomed—not a person, but a twisted root-like spirit, half-formed, trying to imprint memory into his marrow.
Elric turned away.
"I didn't ask for this."
"No," Serenith said. "But you remembered it anyway. That makes you the first to heal the Root, not command it."

The Offer
She extended a small object from her robe.
A seed, glowing faintly blue. It pulsed once—then again, matching Elric's sigil.
"This is the last unbound memory," she said. "It holds the uncut truth. Plant it, and it will grow where it is most needed."
Elric hesitated.
"If I plant this... will it cure them?"
"It will do more," Serenith said. "It will show them what was hidden. But it will also expose you."
Lira stepped forward. "Meaning?"
"Those who fear truth will no longer doubt where it came from."

The bark behind them split once more.
Outside, the wind had changed.
Cai stood, watching. "You found it."
Elric nodded, holding the seed carefully.
"It's not just a cure," he said. "It's the real record. And it's time the world stopped forgetting."
