Nia Mitchell lowered her voice. "You all kept urging me to think it through, warning me about how terrible Hendry Hampton was, but I didn’t listen."
Her voice was low, each word laced with self-deprecation, and every sentence made one’s heart ache.
"Fiona, I shouldn’t have been so stubborn. Look at me now; reality has given me a harsh slap in the face."
Fiona Sutton choked up. Back then, she and Charles Northwood had tried desperately to stop the engagement, convinced Hendry Hampton wasn’t someone Nia Mitchell could rely on. But Nia Mitchell had always seen him as a hero, admiring him deeply, all because of that one time he had carried her to the Hospital when she had a stomach ache. She had been overwhelmed with gratitude.
But that was a separate issue. Nia Mitchell had been blinded by infatuation, so mesmerized by Hendry Hampton’s sweet words that she’d lost all sense of direction.
