Soren Foster sat in the car downstairs of the hotel, idling through the night.
Summer Monroe never came out that night, nor did Matthew Sullivan. The lights in their room only went out just before dawn.
What happened was self-evident.
Soren lowered the car window to let the choking smoke inside the car dissipate, his dark eyes deep as the night.
He looked at the room for a long time, then took out his phone and dialed a number.
After a while, a woman’s husky voice came from the other end.
"Why... are you calling me again?"
Soren lit a cigarette, took a deep drag, leaned back in his seat, his eyes vacant.
"Let’s meet," Soren said slowly, "I have something to tell you."
By nightfall, Soren arrived at the meeting place with Julia Lawrence.
It was the park opposite Julia’s house, where they supposedly first met.
Julia arrived wearing a rather heavy down jacket, her long hair tied back in a ponytail, but she did not look energetic at all.
She seemed ill, with faint dark circles under her eyes making her fair skin appear paler, her eyes devoid of emotion, standing a few steps away from Soren, quietly observing him.
The dim yellow streetlights in the cold night of the park cast Soren as a striking figure, his face indifferent yet handsome, outstanding like a painting from the Middle Ages.
Julia found that she could now calmly scrutinize him, much like she would appraise her oil painting back in school.
"Sit down," Soren looked up at her, his voice deep.
Julia walked over slowly, sat beside him, and through the streetlight, watched the slowly falling maple leaves, asking, "What do you want to say?"
Soren lit another cigarette, blowing smoke rings into the night breeze.
His gaze was empty, his tone monotone, "Evelyn Clayton sent me a surveillance video of your conversation. What are you planning to do next?"
Julia remained calm, only the slight hoarseness in her voice revealed a bit of her unrest: "Wait, wait for my retribution to find me."
Soren let out a hasty laugh.
"Your retribution... so my retribution is coming too, isn’t it?" Soren lowered his eyelashes, the topic shift abrupt, "Julia, leave here."
Julia abruptly looked at him.
Soren felt her gaze but somehow didn’t dare to meet her eyes, "I’ll give you some money. Take it and leave this city, go to any place you want, and don’t come back."
"It was Summer who sent you, wasn’t it?" Julia laughed, tears still glistening in her eyes, "Did she ask you to do this?"
Soren remained silent, which was as good as admitting it.
"It’s really laughable." Julia withdrew her gaze, completely disappointed in this person, "It’s not just me; you’re both laughable and pathetic."
"Once you’re gone, you don’t have to worry about anything here anymore." Soren stubbed out the cigarette butt, "Isn’t that good?"
Julia stood up, not giving Soren another glance.
"Soren, I won’t leave. If you have the guts, make me truly disappear." Julia said, as if muttering to herself, "I’ve already done enough wrongs, I won’t run away anymore..."
Soren suddenly lifted his eyes to look at her, "What do you mean?"
