About four hours passed, and Yolanda Summers’ surgery was over.
The operation was very successful; as long as she followed the doctor’s advice and rested well, there would be no risk of paralysis. However, before she fully recovered, she would have to stay in bed for at least two months.
This meant that even for basic needs like going to the bathroom, she would have to do so in bed, which was a double torment both physically and mentally for the always proud and self-confident Yolanda Summers.
When the effects of the anesthetic wore off and she woke up, her first words were, “Why Uncle Three?”
Purple Summers felt a jolt in her heart upon hearing this.
The other people in the hospital room also fell silent.
Nathaniel Summers’ brows were knitted together with a dense gloom. He pulled out a pack of cigarettes from his pocket and turned to walk out of the ward.
Laura Summers watched Nathaniel’s retreating back, then looked toward Yolanda lying on the hospital bed with a blank expression, and reluctantly tried to explain, “Dad also wanted to save us, he just… didn’t make it in time….”
Yolanda gazed woodenly at the ceiling, as if she couldn’t hear anything, and murmured to herself, “I was closer, so why did he push Uncle Three away? Does it mean a daughter is not as important as a younger brother….”
And this younger brother, born of a different mother, wasn’t particularly close. Did he warrant Dylan Summers sacrificing his daughter to save him?
This was something Laura also couldn’t understand and she said softly, “How can one explain actions taken in an instant….”
Yolanda’s eyes flickered slightly, her lips parted, but she said nothing more.
Purple Summers could probably guess what she wanted to say.
Instantaneous reactions are often the most genuine. The instinct to protect one’s offspring is universal; however, when faced with a choice, Dylan Summers abandoned Yolanda in favor of saving Nathaniel.
In fact, they could also explain it : if he had chosen to push Yolanda, then Laura, who was right behind her, would have been directly in harm’s way. Perhaps Dylan was trying to protect his youngest daughter?
Such explanations felt powerless.
In that brief moment, no one had time to think or weigh their options.
Yolanda’s life was luckily saved, but this plunged her into a dark and oppressive mood.
Every time she closed her eyes, she saw that car coming towards her, feeling as if the blood in her body was flowing backwards, complete panic enveloping her, her feet heavy as lead and immobile. At her most desperate and helpless, her biological father had rushed over and pushed Nathaniel out of death’s grasp!
Her father, who would dodge responsibility at any turn, had actually learned to sacrifice himself for someone else?!
In everyone’s heart, an unbelievable thought emerged.
Then, they all fell into a tacit silence.
Purple Summers walked out of the hospital room and didn’t see Nathaniel. He had left with a pack of cigarettes just now, presumably heading outside to the corridor.
They waited another two hours, and Dylan Summers’ surgery finally ended.
“The next three days are critical. If he wakes up, he can be out of danger,” the doctor said.
Conversely, if he couldn’t wake up within three days, it was tantamount to a death sentence.
Alexander Summers said to Nathaniel, “You stay here and keep watch. We should head back home to give them an update. Yolanda is hospitalized, and we need to bring some personal care items from home.”
Nathaniel sat on the chair on the side of the hospital corridor, head bowed without saying a word.
Alexander took his silence as agreement and pulled Purple out of the ward.
Purple looked back uneasily, but Alexander dragged her into the elevator.
“Is it really okay for us just to leave ?” Purple asked.
“What’s not okay about it?” Alexander’s voice was ice-cold, “A son staying by his father’s side. Isn’t that natural and right?”
Purple was taken aback and said sheepishly, “Don’t talk like that, there’s no evidence….”
Alexander didn’t argue, but the look on his face was full of sarcasm.
He was reminded of a past event.
When Old Master Summers was on his deathbed, Mrs. Summers came back to fight for the inheritance, claiming that Alexander was Atra Blanc’s illegitimate child born from an affair. How else could Old Master Summers have fathered a child at such an old age? In order to clear her name and secure her son’s inheritance, Atra had taken him for a paternity test.
Even though the result later confirmed without doubt, those were the most humiliating days in Alexander’s life.
