Fortunate to Have You This Lifetime Chapter 828

Chapter 828: Chapter 828: Discriminating Against Children_1

Purple Summers couldn’t help but laugh and cry at the same time. Once Autumn Carter had left, she couldn’t help saying, “Autumn’s words always manage to take one by surprise.”

“Those weren’t Autumn’s words.” Edward Carter watched his daughter leave, his face still showing a gentle smile, “That’s a line from Conan; she’s a little detective enthusiast. She has loved these things since she was young. When I was imprisoned, I was really worried that she wouldn’t be able to accept it. Guess what Autumn said?”

Purple Summers asked, “What did she say?”

Edward Carter chuckled, “Autumn said that fate had marked her for something extraordinary, just like in the cartoons. To become Spider-Man, one must be bitten by a spider; to become Batman, one must be scared by a bat; to become a great detective, a relative must be falsely imprisoned. From then on, she embarked on the path of solving mysteries, struggling against all sorts of evil forces.”

Purple Summers laughed, “Autumn is very cute.”

“Yes,” Edward Carter’s gaze returned to Purple Summers, “So… what do you plan to talk about with me?”

Edward Carter had been in prison for two years, with short cropped hair, wearing a uniform prison outfit. Purple Summers could no longer see the pampered air of a wealthy young man in him; he looked very ordinary, and it was hard to imagine that he was the brutal criminal who had killed his wife and cut off her head.

Two years ago, as Edward Carter was driving home, the police stopped him and arrested him on charges of murder.

The servant confirmed that the couple had just had a big fight. After Edward Carter left, the servant found the wife’s body in the bedroom, with the head missing. Edward Carter claimed that he had been drinking in a bar at the time of the crime. Later investigations revealed he was lying; his alibi was overturned by the lack of surveillance footage and the servant’s testimony, leading to his imprisonment.

After thinking for a moment, Purple Summers said, “Let’s talk about the alibi.”

Edward Carter’s gaze dimmed slightly, “I don’t think I can help you. I’ve already said all I could, I was drinking in the bar that whole day…”

“I’ve seen your case files,” Purple Summers interrupted him, “The bartender didn’t see you that day, and the surveillance footage in front of the bar also didn’t capture you entering. You’re lying, Mr. Edward Carter, and I think that’s why your lawyer lost the case twice.”

Edward Carter was silent.

Purple Summers continued, “To the jury, lies mean guilt. If a person is innocent, why would he lie? But I know there’s another reason that makes people lie, like… covering for someone out of personal feelings.”

Edward Carter lowered his eyes, his fingers curling unconsciously.

“You’d rather go to prison than reveal where you were that night. Could the truth be more frightening than jail?” Purple Summers calmly watched the man before her and suddenly asked, “Does it involve Autumn?”

Edward Carter’s expression froze, and his eyes grew darker, “I think we have nothing to talk about. This meeting can end now.”

“So I guessed right?” Purple Summers smiled instead, took out a photo from her bag, laid it on the table, and gently pushed it towards Edward Carter, “Were you with her that night? Is this woman Autumn’s mother?”

Edward Carter’s complexion turned completely dark; he stood up abruptly, “Enough! Whatever you have found, please stop immediately, Miss Purple Summers! I don’t need your ridiculous and juvenile sympathy, nor any justice on my behalf! I’ve seen too many lawyers like you, who think they are great? Who think they’re remarkable? I’m sorry, but I don’t think so at all! I only find lawyers like you to be as irksome as fleas, lacking self-awareness, and so utterly annoying!”

The prison guard noticed the inmate’s unstable emotions and immediately approached.

Purple Summers gestured that it wasn’t necessary.

“Mr. Edward Carter, this photo was given to me by Autumn. Can you believe it? An eight-year-old child looking for evidence everywhere to prove your innocence,” Purple Summers said, “Autumn was right about one thing. This is a society that discriminates against children. You’re just sacrificing wilfully, without caring what Autumn really thinks in her heart.”
