Back at the shop, he grinned at Youyou. “Good news.”
Youyou’s eyes sparkled. “Did Teacher Rong confess to you?!”

“Stop imagining things.”
Youyou clutched her head. “Ow! But you and Teacher Rong are a perfect match! I’d be so happy if she became my mom…”
Jiang Feng sighed softly. “That’s not happening.”
“Why not?” She counted on her fingers earnestly. “Do you not like her? If you don’t, then never mind. Your happiness matters most.”
His chest warmed. He ruffled her hair. “We’ll talk about it later.”
Truthfully, he did like Rong Shuang.
She was the most beautiful woman he’d ever met, kind, gentle, and utterly devoted to Youyou.
But he was a divorced man, still renting, with meager savings.
The more flawless Rong Shuang seemed, the more he felt unworthy.
Besides, he couldn’t fathom why she treated him so specially.
Was it just a fleeting crush? Would she lose interest someday?

Her old complex lacked underground parking.
She texted Tang Hemei: “Come get me. No umbrella.”
But Tang Hemei was live-streaming, her phone ignored.
“Thanks for the superchat, Brother Ma! Extended stream tonight!”
The taxi stopped at the gate. “Ma’am, I can’t drive in. You’ll have to walk.”
With no reply from Tang Hemei, Rong Shuang sprinted through the rain, bag over her head.
Dripping wet, she finally reached her door.
Tang Hemei, mid-stream, yelped: “Wait, guys! My food supplier is back!”
She ripped off her headphones and gasped. “Why are you drenched?!”
Rong Shuang glared. “I texted you.”
Tang Hemei checked her phone. “Shit! I missed it! Are the buns okay?!”
Rong Shuang handed over the paper bag, slightly damp, but the buns were unharmed.
“You’re the best! Love you!”
“Ugh. Enjoy.” Rong Shuang headed for the shower.
But as hot water soothed her, a sharp cramp twisted her stomach.
Her period was coming. The usual two-day prelude.
Then dizziness hit, was she feverish?
She brewed ginger tea and curled up in bed, phone in hand.
A message from Jiang Feng: “Home safe?”
Instantly, her aches eased. She typed back: “Yes, just showered. You?”
“Same. Watching cartoons with Youyou.”
“Drink ginger tea. Don’t get sick.” (She’d rather suffer alone than see him unwell.)
Mid-chat, a work notification popped up, a report from the kindergarten.
As she worked, her headache worsened.
Tang Hemei, now off-stream, knocked. “You okay?”
Rong Shuang’s voice was thick. “No.”
Tang Hemei took one look and panicked. “Your face is burning up!”
The thermometer confirmed it: 37.8°C (100°F).
“Call in sick tomorrow.”
Rong Shuang shook her head. “Just get me medicine.”
“Why?! You co-own the damn kindergarten, just text Liu Yanan!”
(Future Star Kindergarten was funded partly by Rong Shuang’s 2.7-million-yuan investment. Though repaid, she still held shares.)
Rong Shuang mumbled, “If I rest… I can’t see Jiang Feng and Youyou.”
Tang Hemei groaned. “You’re hopeless! Stay home!”
“I want to see him.” (One day apart? Unthinkable.)
Tang Hemei relented. “Fine. Take meds. If you’re better tomorrow, go. If not, stay put.”
After gulping down bitter pills, Rong Shuang brushed her teeth and checked her phone.
“Goodnight,” she whispered inwardly, too softly to disturb him.
