Regarding what kind of existence it was, it had a clear understanding.
Slimes as low-intelligence Magic Creatures, typically acted on instinct.
Apart from special mutations, most Slimes, unlike Goblins, do not have any fixation on assaulting humans.
To their almost non-existent brain core, a passing human is no different from a passing rabbit, just a slightly larger block of protein.
And when there is no prey nearby, Slimes basically live on Magic Elements, dew, grass leaves, even soil and other inorganics.
Which means, as long as humans don't actively approach, Slimes' lifestyle appears very simple and harmless.
Of course, they wouldn't reject digesting those organics and proteins that actively come close.
For those humans reduced to bones or even completely digested, Slimes are not some gentle Magic Creatures.
