Feng Yijin was a bit impatient and raised her voice: "When he returns, I’ll point him out to you, but even if I say it, you won’t recognize him."
Han Xiaozheng noticed her shouting, and for some reason, his expression changed. It wasn’t that he found her shouting annoying.
He turned and left.
Sheng Tang had been secretly watching all along.
Later, just before class started, Han Xiaozheng came back.
Feng Yijin called the classmate who was on duty outside, and they talked for a while.
In her heart, Sheng Tang felt a vague sense of unease.
She didn’t know why, but she had this premonition. Every time danger approached, her sixth sense would inexplicably alert her.
Jiang Baocu and the others came back with a cake to share with Sheng Tang, but Sheng Tang declined.
"Do you know Sun Shaoping?" Sheng Tang asked Jiang Baocu.
Jiang Baocu, with a mouth full of cake, mumbled, "Who?"
"The student on duty today."
Jiang Baocu shook her head: "Not really familiar, where does he sit?"
In this class, there was no one Jiang Baocu wasn’t at least somewhat familiar with. Her specialty was being well-informed.
However, Sun Shaoping was perhaps too ordinary, to the point of being featureless, so Jiang Baocu knew very little about him.
He was one of the few in the class that even Jiang Baocu hadn’t noticed.
"What’s up with him?" Jiang Baocu asked after swallowing the cake.
"Is he a scholarship student?"
"Definitely not, we only have two scholarship students in our class," Jiang Baocu replied.
Sheng Tang understood.
During the afternoon class, she intentionally turned to look at Sun Shaoping’s seat. He was sitting in the last row of the second group, using a book to block his desk, possibly reading a novel.
Sheng Tang kept a discreet watch.
After school, Sheng Tang deliberately lagged behind, waiting until most of the classmates had left. Sun Shaoping got up to leave, and she put the last book into her backpack and followed him out.
From a distance, Sheng Tang saw Han Xiaozheng again. He had his arm around Sun Shaoping’s shoulder, and the two were chatting and laughing.
If Sun Shaoping knew Han Xiaozheng, Jiang Baocu would have found out already, indicating they just became friends today.
And what was special about Sun Shaoping?
He was simply the duty student for Class 2 today.
Sheng Tang left the campus and took the bus, lost in thought, so much so that she missed her stop. Then, she waited for another bus to go back one stop.
This delay cost her an extra twenty minutes, and Gu Shiting was restless in the car.
His eyes were cold as he stared intently at the bus.
Sheng Tang didn’t have a phone today, making it difficult to contact her. He wanted to go back and look for her but was worried he’d miss her, feeling anxious and uneasy.
Sheng Tang knocked on the car window from the left side, and Gu Shiting turned around abruptly.
She smiled slightly, revealing her dimples and her clean, tidy teeth.
Looking at her like this, Gu Shiting’s heart softened, making all his previous anxiety and nervousness seem worthwhile.
"I’m sorry," Sheng Tang got in the car and explained to Gu Shiting, "I might be a bit tired. I lost focus on the bus and missed my stop."
Gu Shiting gently held her hand.
The early winter afternoon was a bit chilly, the car had the heater on, but Gu Shiting’s fingertips were cold.
Sheng Tang understood his worry.
"I’m fine, really," Sheng Tang tried hard to smile at him, "Even last time when Gu Jiahui sent someone to harm me, I managed to avoid it, didn’t I?"
At the mention of this, Gu Shiting’s grip tightened, the cold seemingly seeping into Sheng Tang’s skin.
For the first time, Sheng Tang realized that in this world, there was someone who, despite not being related to her, cared so intensely about her safety.
"...I’ll give you a phone," Gu Shiting finally managed to say after a while.
His heart had been swinging between hot oil and a freezing abyss for the past twenty minutes.
"Okay, thank you," Sheng Tang replied.
