Horrific Shorts: Zombie Edition Chapter 105

Evan was lost in the world of music, his headphones shielding him from the quiet stillness of the house. The soft glow of his laptop illuminated his face, reflecting the feline silhouette sticker on its lid. His cat, Luna, perched on the desk, watching him with unblinking eyes. The room was calm, the kind of stillness that felt almost too perfect, as if the world was holding its breath.

But there was something Evan couldn't sense, something that lurked just beyond his awareness. The air was thick with a presence he had not noticed, and the darkness in the corner of the room seemed to stretch, as if it were alive.

Behind him, the door creaked open, barely audible over the music in his ears. A shadow, darker than the night itself, slipped through the narrow gap, its form almost indistinguishable from the blackness of the hallway. The figure was tall and gaunt, with skin that seemed to cling to its bones like a decaying shroud.

Its eyes, two crimson pinpoints of malevolence, stared unblinkingly at the boy, who remained blissfully unaware of the horror that had entered his space.

Evan's mind was elsewhere, lost in thoughts about school, friends, and the mundane details of everyday life. His hand absentmindedly scratched Luna's head, the cat purring softly, oblivious to the danger that loomed behind her.

The figure moved closer, its movements unnervingly silent, like a whisper in the wind. It hovered just behind Evan, its breath cold and ragged, sending a shiver through the room that went unnoticed by the boy. The entity leaned closer, its skeletal hand slowly reaching out, fingers curling like the claws of a beast. It paused, as if savoring the moment, the anticipation of what was to come.

Luna's ears twitched, and she lifted her head, her golden eyes reflecting the dim light of the laptop screen. She turned to look at the dark shape behind Evan, her pupils narrowing into slits. A low, guttural growl rumbled in her throat, a warning that went unheard by her distracted owner.

The figure recoiled slightly at the cat's defiance, its red eyes narrowing. For a moment, the room was filled with a tension so thick it was almost tangible. Evan sighed, finally taking off his headphones to give his ears a rest, unaware of how close he was to the edge of terror.

Luna leapt off the desk, her fur bristling, and hissed at the darkness. Evan frowned, puzzled by his usually calm cat's sudden aggression. He turned his head slowly, his gaze following Luna's, his heart beginning to race as the coldness in the room became apparent. The shadowy figure was no longer at the door; it was right behind him.

A chill ran down his spine, and his breath caught in his throat as he finally registered the presence in the room. The figure loomed over him, its empty eyes locking onto his. For a split second, time seemed to stop, and all the warmth drained from Evan's body.

He wanted to scream, to run, but his body was frozen in place. The figure's hand inched closer, its fingers brushing against his shoulder with an icy touch that sent shockwaves of dread through his soul. He could feel the malevolence pouring off it in waves, suffocating him in its grip.

And then, as quickly as it had appeared, the figure vanished, dissolving into the shadows as if it had never been there. The door creaked shut behind it, the room returning to its former stillness. But the chill remained, lingering in the air like a ghostly reminder of what had just occurred.

Evan sat there, trembling, his heart pounding in his chest. He looked down at Luna, who had returned to her spot on the desk, her gaze still fixed on the door. She meowed softly, as if to reassure him, but the fear in his heart was not so easily dispelled.

He knew that he had not imagined it. The memory of the figure's cold touch still lingered on his skin, a reminder that the horrors that lurk in the dark are all too real. And from that night on, Evan always made sure to close his door tight and check the shadows before putting on his headphones, for he had learned that in the quiet of the night, he was never truly alone.
