Horrific Shorts: Zombie Edition Chapter 117

In the heart of a dense forest, there stood an old mansion, long abandoned and forgotten by the world. Its once grand façade was now decaying, overtaken by creeping vines and the relentless march of time. The townsfolk nearby called it "The Lurking Shadow," a name whispered in hushed tones, a place avoided at all costs.

But curiosity is a powerful force, especially for those who don't heed warnings. A group of friends—Amy, David, Lisa, and Mark—decided to explore the mansion, driven by a thrill for adventure and the promise of a story to tell. They laughed off the old tales of ghosts and curses as mere superstition, convinced that the mansion was just a crumbling relic of the past.

They arrived at dusk, the sun's last rays casting long shadows across the grounds. The mansion loomed ahead, its dark windows like empty eyes staring into their souls. The door creaked open with little resistance, as if inviting them in. Inside, the air was thick with dust and the scent of decay.

Cobwebs draped from the ceiling, and the floorboards groaned under their weight as they stepped cautiously through the grand entrance hall.

"Creepy," Lisa muttered, her voice echoing through the vast space.

David grinned. "This place is awesome. Imagine the stories we can tell after this!"

They split up to explore, each drawn to different corners of the mansion. Amy found herself in a room filled with old, rotting furniture, the remains of what was once a luxurious sitting area. As she wandered, something caught her eye—a mirror, old and tarnished, yet still reflecting the room behind her. She stepped closer, wiping away the dust.

In the reflection, she saw herself, but there was something else—a shadow, creeping closer, just out of sight.

Amy spun around, but the room was empty. Her heart raced as she turned back to the mirror, but the shadow was gone. She shook her head, trying to dismiss it as a trick of the light, but an uneasy feeling settled over her.

Meanwhile, Mark was in the library, the walls lined with books that had not been touched in years. He pulled one from the shelf, coughing as a cloud of dust rose into the air. As he opened it, the pages crumbled in his hands. But there was something else—a note, scrawled in a shaky hand, hidden between the pages. It read:

*"Do not look into the eyes of the shadow. It will take your soul."*

Mark frowned, a chill running down his spine. He pocketed the note, deciding it was time to regroup with the others.

In another part of the mansion, David and Lisa were in the dining room, where a grand table still stood, its surface covered in a thick layer of dust. David was busy taking pictures, oblivious to the growing darkness outside. Lisa, however, felt a presence—something watching, waiting. The hairs on the back of her neck stood up, and she turned slowly, her breath catching in her throat.

Standing in the doorway was a figure, tall and gaunt, with long, white hair cascading down its back. Its face was obscured by the shadows, but its eyes—its eyes glowed with an unnatural, sickly yellow light. The figure smiled, revealing sharp, decaying teeth.

"David…" Lisa's voice was barely a whisper, her body frozen in fear.

David looked up, but by the time he did, the figure was gone. He saw the terror in Lisa's eyes and knew something was wrong. "What's going on?" he asked, moving to her side.

"We need to get out of here," she said, her voice trembling.

As they regrouped with Amy and Mark, the unease in the air was palpable. Amy recounted her experience with the mirror, and Mark showed them the note he had found. The laughter and excitement from earlier had vanished, replaced by a deep, gnawing fear.

Suddenly, the door to the mansion slammed shut, and the temperature dropped. The lights flickered, and the shadows in the corners of the room seemed to move, coalescing into a form. The figure emerged again, its smile wider, more menacing, its eyes locked onto them.

It whispered in a voice like the wind through dead trees, "You looked into my eyes. Now, your souls are mine."

The friends turned to run, but the shadows wrapped around them, pulling them back, holding them in place. The figure approached, its long fingers reaching out, cold as death.

One by one, the light in their eyes dimmed, their souls consumed by the darkness. Their screams echoed through the mansion, but outside, the night remained silent. The mansion stood as it always had, a monument to the horrors within, waiting for the next curious souls to wander too close.

And the shadows? They grew a little darker that night, a little stronger, fed by the terror of those who dared to enter The Lurking Shadow.
