Horrific Shorts: Zombie Edition Chapter 122

In the remote village of Blackwood, there was a tale that mothers whispered to their children on stormy nights—a tale of the Grinning Witch. Her name had been lost to time, but her image was etched into the minds of those who had dared to venture into the dark woods where she was said to dwell.

The story went that long ago, a woman had been accused of witchcraft by the villagers. They said she consorted with dark forces, her beauty masking the evil that lurked beneath her skin. One fateful night, the villagers decided to put an end to her wickedness. They stormed her cottage, dragging her out into the cold night.

Despite her protests, they bound her and set her ablaze, her screams echoing through the forest as the flames consumed her.

But as the fire raged, something terrifying happened. Instead of cries of pain, the witch began to laugh—a chilling, maniacal laugh that pierced the night. Her face contorted into a grotesque grin, her eyes glowing with an unholy light. The flames seemed to feed her fury, and as the fire burned her flesh, she swore vengeance on all who had wronged her.

Her laughter grew louder until, with one final, bloodcurdling shriek, she was gone, leaving nothing but a charred spot on the earth.

The villagers thought they had rid themselves of her evil, but they were wrong. The Grinning Witch had not died. Her spirit had been freed, and it roamed the woods, her grotesque grin forever etched on her ghostly face. Those who dared to enter the woods at night would hear her laughter, growing louder and closer until they came face to face with the Grinning Witch herself.

Her yellow eyes would lock onto theirs, and her hideous smile would widen as she whispered their doom.

Few had seen her and lived to tell the tale. Those who did were never the same. They spoke of the way her bony fingers would brush against their skin, cold as death, as she leaned in close, her grin never fading. And when she laughed, it was as if all the warmth in the world had been sucked away, leaving only cold, unrelenting terror in its wake.

One particularly brave—or perhaps foolish—man decided to confront the witch. He had lost his wife and child to the woods, and grief had driven him to seek revenge. Armed with nothing but a lantern and a knife, he ventured into the dark forest, the villagers' warnings ringing in his ears. As he walked deeper into the woods, the air grew colder, and the shadows seemed to twist and dance around him.

And then, he heard it—the witch's laughter, echoing through the trees. He froze, his heart pounding in his chest, but he pressed on, determined to end the witch's curse once and for all. The laughter grew louder, more sinister, until it was all around him, drowning out even his thoughts.

Suddenly, she appeared before him, her long, white hair framing her skeletal face, her eyes burning with a malevolent light. The grin on her face was wider than anything humanly possible, her teeth sharp and menacing. The man raised his knife, but his hand trembled, the cold seeping into his bones.

The Grinning Witch leaned in close, her rancid breath washing over him as she whispered in his ear, "You cannot kill what is already dead."

With a final, haunting laugh, she lunged at him, her bony fingers wrapping around his throat. The man screamed, but it was swallowed by the darkness, his vision fading as the witch's grip tightened. The last thing he saw was her grin, stretching impossibly wide as she drained the life from his body.

When the villagers found him the next morning, his face was frozen in a twisted expression of terror, his eyes wide open, staring at nothing. The knife lay beside him, untouched. The villagers knew then that the Grinning Witch's curse would never be broken. She would haunt the woods forever, her laughter echoing through the night, her grin a harbinger of doom for all who dared to cross her path.

And so, the village of Blackwood remained in fear, the story of the Grinning Witch passed down from generation to generation. Her haunting smile served as a warning to all: never enter the woods at night, for the Grinning Witch is always watching, always waiting... to claim her next victim.
