Horrific Shorts: Zombie Edition Chapter 262

As Damien and Mira navigated the winding passages of the underground network, the air grew thick with tension. The path was darker here, silent but for the drip of unseen water and the echo of their footsteps. Yet, hidden among the silence was the faint hum of voices—a distant, almost ghostly sound.

Damien's hand tightened around his weapon. "Sounds like someone's down here. But no one's been to this part of the Citadel in years."

They rounded a corner, coming face-to-face with a figure cloaked in shadows. A man, gaunt and worn, stepped forward, his face familiar yet unsettling. Mira gasped, a hand over her mouth. "No… it can't be. Marcus?"

Marcus, Mira's childhood friend, had disappeared years ago during an attack on their settlement. Yet here he stood, eyes dark, lips curled in a half-smile that didn't reach his gaze. Damien sensed something was wrong—this man was no friend, but a pawn.

"Mira. Damien." Marcus's voice was chillingly calm. "You've come far, but this is where your journey ends."

Mira's shock gave way to anger. "Why, Marcus? You were one of us. You fought with us. And now you're here… working for them?"

Marcus chuckled, the sound hollow. "Survival changes people. The Zombie King promised power to those who served him, and I decided to live."

Before they could react, shadows shifted, and more figures emerged from the darkness—other deserters, twisted and loyal to the Zombie King. Damien positioned himself in front of Mira, bracing for the fight.

"It doesn't have to end this way, Marcus," Damien called out, his voice edged with both warning and sorrow.

Marcus raised his weapon, eyes narrowing. "It already has."

The two sides clashed, and the narrow tunnel erupted into chaos. Damien fought with practiced precision, his strikes swift and merciless. Mira's amulet glowed with an intense light, warding off those who came too close. The echoes of steel and cries filled the air, the once-silent passage now a battleground.

As they fought, Damien caught glimpses of Marcus—his face a mask of both rage and regret. A fierce conflict simmered within him, though his actions betrayed his words. Damien knew that Marcus was beyond saving, but he felt a pang of loss all the same.

In a decisive move, Damien disarmed Marcus, sending his weapon clattering to the ground. "It's over, Marcus. The Zombie King's promises are empty."

For a moment, a flash of the old Marcus shone through the hardened exterior. But just as quickly, it faded, replaced by cold resolve. "Then we're all doomed."

Marcus lunged, forcing Damien to act swiftly. In one final, tragic moment, Marcus fell, his eyes clouding over, yet there was a hint of peace as he whispered, "Mira… forgive me."

Silence returned to the passage as the echoes faded. Mira knelt beside Marcus, grief flickering in her gaze. But as Damien placed a comforting hand on her shoulder, they both knew that this was the path they had chosen. Together, they would bring justice—not just for themselves but for everyone who had been betrayed.
