Horrific Shorts: Zombie Edition Chapter 266

After narrowly escaping the Zombie King's stronghold with the antidote, Damien and Mira hurried toward a safe zone hidden deep in the mountains. Their journey was cautious, constantly watching for lurking undead or wandering scouts from the King's army. The antidote felt like a fragile promise of hope, but the weight of it pressed on both of them.

As they reached the outskirts of the safe zone, Mira sensed a shift in the air—a scent that hinted of burned wood and blood. They entered the encampment, only to find it abandoned, scattered with remnants of a brutal battle. Tents were torn apart, supplies raided, and a few bodies lay still under the midday sun.

"They found them…" Mira's voice was a whisper, filled with sorrow. "The King's forces must've gotten here first."

Damien clenched his fists, scanning the destruction. "If there were any survivors, they'd be hiding nearby. We need to find them and protect this antidote."

As they ventured deeper into the camp, they heard a faint rustling from one of the half-destroyed tents. A teenage girl emerged, her face streaked with dirt and fear. She clutched a small dagger, her hands trembling. When she saw Damien and Mira, her eyes widened with a mix of hope and uncertainty.

"Are you here to help?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Mira approached her gently, kneeling to meet her gaze. "We're here to stop the Zombie King. But first, we need to know if anyone else survived."

The girl nodded, gesturing toward a hidden hatch under a nearby tent. "A few of us hid down there when they attacked. I didn't know if anyone would come…or if the King's forces would find us."

Damien quickly opened the hatch, revealing a small group of survivors huddled together in the underground space, their faces reflecting equal parts relief and terror. Among them was a former medic who immediately took an interest in the antidote vial.

"If you're planning to use this against the King," the medic said, examining the vial, "you'll need to distribute it carefully. It won't be enough to stop him entirely, but it could weaken his control over his undead army."

The survivors agreed to help Damien and Mira reach a nearby lookout tower, from where they could signal other resistance members scattered across the mountains. The group moved with urgency, keeping close to the rocks and shadows as they ascended the steep path to the tower.

At the top, Damien handed Mira a makeshift signal device crafted from scavenged metal and mirrors. She angled it toward the distant hills, reflecting the sun in a sequence that spelled out their position and a message: Help Needed – Antidote Secured.

Moments later, an answering glint flashed from the valley below. Reinforcements were on their way.

Standing at the lookout, Damien turned to Mira, a faint smile breaking through the exhaustion on his face. "This antidote could be our one shot to turn the tide."

As they waited for their allies, the mountain air filled them with a rare sense of peace—a brief calm before they would face the Zombie King's wrath once again.
