The evening sky was thick with storm clouds as Damien Rook trekked into the abandoned industrial district, Mira at his side. Word had spread of a new threat: a group of mutated zombies that had surfaced from beneath the old subway tunnels. They were faster, smarter, and far deadlier, unlike anything the survivors had faced before. Damien's instincts told him this was the work of the Zombie King, but something felt different—darker, even more calculated.
"Are you sure about this?" Mira whispered, glancing nervously down the empty street. "The others wanted to help."
Damien shook his head. "This mission requires speed, not numbers. We'll scout ahead and return before dawn. Besides, the fewer of us here, the fewer lives at risk."
As they descended into the subway station, the air grew cold and stale, heavy with an unnatural quiet. Damien switched on his flashlight, illuminating tracks covered in grime and litter. Their footsteps echoed ominously in the silence. They moved deeper into the tunnels, where the faint sound of shuffling and growls began to drift toward them.
Then, out of the darkness, a pair of glowing red eyes appeared, followed by more—dozens of them. Damien's grip tightened on his weapon. "Ready?"
"Always," Mira replied, drawing her knife.
The creatures lunged, and the fight began. Damien and Mira moved in a deadly rhythm, slicing and dodging with precision honed from countless battles. Yet these zombies were different. Their skin was thicker, their movements more coordinated. For every one that fell, another seemed to take its place.
In the heat of the fight, Damien saw a flash of movement—a figure watching them from the shadows. It was cloaked, its silhouette familiar yet disturbing. The Zombie King? Or someone else?
The figure stepped forward, and Damien froze as he recognized the face beneath the hood. It was Elias, twisted by infection, his eyes filled with a malevolent intelligence. "Miss me, Rook?"
"Elias…" Damien's voice was low, edged with fury and disbelief.
"Thought I'd go down quietly, didn't you?" Elias sneered, his voice a hoarse whisper. "But the King gave me power—real power."
Before Damien could react, Elias sent the mutated zombies charging again. With Mira covering his back, Damien advanced, his focus on Elias. The two locked in a brutal clash, weapons clashing as Elias's movements became more animalistic, his strength terrifying.
Finally, with one well-timed strike, Damien brought Elias to his knees. The former ally's sneer faded, replaced by a moment of fear before he crumpled to the ground.
The remaining zombies, now leaderless, hesitated before fleeing into the shadows. Damien's chest heaved as he stood over Elias's lifeless body, grief mingling with relief.
Mira laid a hand on his shoulder. "It's over," she murmured.
"No," Damien replied, glancing deeper into the tunnels. "This is just the beginning."
As they made their way back to the surface, Damien knew the fight was far from finished. The King would stop at nothing, and he'd be ready.
